Extraordinary Roots Music,
By
This review is from: Negro Prison Blues and Songs (Audio CD)
Alan Lomax recorded these work songs and blues at Southern Prison Farms in the middle of the 20th Century. This is a recording of a rich cultural tradition, genuine folk music, creative, spontaneous, humorous, sometimes poignant. I remember hearing this almost 40 years ago when my elder brother brought the vinyl disc home from the University of Virginia, when campus stores sold more books and recordings than they did T-shirts.
It made an indelible impression on me. When I saw this was available on CD, I had to have it.

This is pretty authentic and rare folk music. Have not heard anything like it and not broadly covered or played on any radio stations or public television that I know of. A small reflection of the deep south prison culture.

This is a pretty good collection of blues music gathered by Alan Lomax. No, it's not the level of music you get from a state of the art recording studio but it's great if you're looking for some good American Roots music. RA from Southern Minnestoa |
