This review is from: Negro Spirituals (Audio CD)
This is a fantastic recording. Barbara Hendricks has a beautiful voice, and she uses it with great finesse. Each track on this CD is spellbinding. There is plenty of variety in terms of tempo and emotion. But throughout the album, Hendricks is able to convey a high level of energy and passion, even during the quietest and solemnest moments. The exuberance displayed in the more upbeat numbers, such as "Git on Boa'd Little Child'n," is contagious. I found myself transfixed by the urgency that came through in slower numbers like "Fix Me, Jesus." Besides Hendricks's wonderful vocals, Dmitri Alexeex provides excellent piano accompaniment. The two work marvelously together. The accompaniment is both supportive and standout and only heightens the listening experience. This is an excellent recording that I recommend whole-heartedly.

Great album,

Barbara Hendricks has been one of my favorite singers for years and this is one of the best albums she made. Every track is wonderful and every song shows off her wonderful tone and range. She never sounds like she's singing down to the material. ALso, I've long thought this album wasn't available so I was thrilled today to find this for sale. I haven't heard the album in several years and have such fond memories of it.
