Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

In this second edition, the author revises the basic material of his earlier book and introduces and explains recent technological advances, including RSS, blogs, open source, and podcasting. Comprising 17 chapters, the book is divided into five parts. Part 1 offers a historical overview of library technology. Part 2 focuses on technology tools (computers, networks, software, storage devices, electronic resources, etc). Part 3 turns attention to library users and staff (adaptive/assistive technology, virtual reference, Web sites, distance learning, and presentation technologies). Part 4 examines the technology environment (security measures, troubleshooting, and ergonomics).Part 5 tackles long-range planning and the future of library technology. Information throughout is well organized and clearly expressed. Figures, screen shots, chapter bibliographies, and a glossary supplement the text. This guide truly succeeds in elucidating the complexities of library technology and should prove a welcome addition to all libraries. Sean Kinder

Review

A useful guide...Would serve as a good teaching tool, as a practical introduction to the topic for library workers, and as a source of suggestions on where to look next for information about a piece of unfamiliar technology. --The Australian Library Journal, February 2008 --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Burke (Interim Director of the Garden-Harvey Library, Miami University of Ohio) is a straightforward guide for librians and library workers to the latest technological tools available to the profession. Chapters discuss general concepts and specific "how-to" tips in acquiring and fully utilizing computers from desktops to laptops to handheld devices, computer networks from WiFi to email, software systems, library databases, search tools from Amazon to Google, how to protect library technology from spam, spyware, and other security threats, and much more. Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I bought this book for one of my graduate courses. It's okay. I'm not a big fan of the book, but I was able to understand the material.
