An excellent resource for someone looking to learn about the life and career of one of the greatest artists of the last 50 years.

Very little information on Neil, as a person, but more of a comprehensive listing of what songs are on what albums.

This is an important book for contemporary music. From a critical point-of-view because it is an exemplar of how to present a textual evaluation of an important musical icon; and from a reader's perspective because it's downright enjoyable. Glen Boyd's humour and background as a music journalist add to the experience of being able to dip into the book at any page to learn "FAQ" regarding Neil Young, his music, work and personality. Warts-and-all.

From the excellent foreword written by Thrasher (nom-de-plume of a well-known 'Rustie', or hard-core Neil Young fan) to the well-constructed Index, this text contains something for everyone: from Rusties, via those who don't know much about Neil and his music but want to learn, to the most casual of readers looking for an entertaining bed-time read. Boyd's subject is shown to be, at times, a fascinating paradox in contemporary music - someone with integrity who follows his muse WHEREVER she takes him, regardless of the expectations of others - who has explored almost every genre of musical expression and tried (sometimes, arguably, unsuccessfully) to make them his own. This extensively-researched collection of FAQ and anecdotes follows Young's career through all his changes, with "memories to spare", "from Hank to Hendrix", and often from personal crises to personal triumphs.

It's a pleasure just OPENING this book, and starting what is essentially a voyage of discovery, so I don't wish to spoil the experience for the reader by giving away too much of the contents. But the Chapter Titles are a hoot, and wonderfully evocative, and the inclusion of a list of handy and informative Neil-based websites, combined with the bibliography, and a few quotes from musicians regarding the man himself, round off a great package. And did I mention the author's humour shining through?

Buy this book. You won't regret it. And remember: "Rust never sleeps..." Score: 4 out of 5 stars from me.

I hate to be critical. I’m sure the author put a lot of time and effort into this project and he’s probably a nice guy but the restatement of the same facts over and over again in exactly the same way drove me insane. The copy and paste reviews are dead on. This book could have been one tenth the length had it not been for his habit of constantly repeating (as many as 10 times) the same observations. Who edited this thing? The Black Sabbath FAQ was excellent. This installment was a wasted opportunity. Fanboy prose, no discography. Sorry, unless you know absolutely nothing about Neil Young, this book is a waste of time.

Very entertaining read. I thought I was a Neil Young expert, and I learned a lot through this book. I feel a lot more informed about his career and know more about him after reading this. It's broken up into easy to read chapters from 8-15 pages. It really makes you want to go and buy the cds you don't have and jam out on the ones you do. He even has a chapter devoted to bootlegs. A great book!!

I've been a Neil Young fan since After The Goldrush was released and have read several good books about this enigmatic and maverick songwriter and musician. This particular book is well written by a long time fan and seasoned music journalist with a knack for getting inside the known and more obscure recordings. He picks up on Neil's strong sense of humour and blends it with lines from his songs to bring out the stories behind the man and his music. I found the book very easy and enjoyable to read while travelling. The author corresponds frequently to fans on Rust and is genuinely interested in exchanging views and information. For novices and seasoned fans of Neil Young I would say it is well worth reading, bringing to life his huge back catalogue of official and bootlegged recordings.Highly recommended read for Neil fans and anyone interested in the evolution of Americana, folk, rock, jazz, wonderful guitar sounds, poetry in motion, the now extinct hippy tribe in Laurel Canyon, world politics.... and so much more. But most of all, about the music of a major 20th century talent, rivalling Bob Dylan for endurance and quality.

As a long term NY fan I know my topic and some other books have been dissapointing. However Glen Boyd has done an excellent job, very readable for a newcomer and full of interesting insights for the hard core fan. Totally recommended.
