Book Description

May 1, 2012 Faq Series
(FAQ). Neil Young has had one of the most remarkable careers in the history of music. He hasn't just outlived many of his contemporaries some of whom were great inspirations for him ("From Hank to Hendrix," as one of his own songs says); his artistry lives on through those he has inspired (Pearl Jam, Radiohead), and he remains relevant and vital well into his fifth decade of making music. Young also continues to crank out records at a rate that would kill most artists half his age. Between his solo and live albums, and his work with Buffalo Springfield and Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, his remarkable career has spanned well over 50 albums. Although he has experimented in genres from syntho-pop to rockabilly, Neil Young is best known for the fully cranked, feedback-laden noise he makes with Crazy Horse ( Rust Never Sleeps and Ragged Glory ) and the more introspective folk-pop ( Harvest ). The glue that binds his work together is the songwriting. Because when it comes to writing great, timeless songs, Neil Young has few equals. Neil Young FAQ is the first definitive guide to the music of this mercurial and methodical, enduring, and infuriating icon. From the Archives to Zuma and from the Ditch Trilogy to the Geffen years, this book covers every song and album in painstaking detail-including bootlegs and such lost recordings as Homegrown , Chrome Dreams , Toast , and Meadow Dusk . Obscure facts and anecdotes from the studio to the road, along with dozens of rare images, make this book a must-have for Young fans.

This is an important book for contemporary music. From a critical point-of-view because it is an exemplar of how to present a textual evaluation of an important musical icon; and from a reader's perspective because it's downright enjoyable. Glen Boyd's humour and background as a music journalist add to the experience of being able to dip into the book at any page to learn "FAQ" regarding Neil Young, his music, work and personality. Warts-and-all.

From the excellent foreword written by Thrasher (nom-de-plume of a well-known 'Rustie', or hard-core Neil Young fan) to the well-constructed Index, this text contains something for everyone: from Rusties, via those who don't know much about Neil and his music but want to learn, to the most casual of readers looking for an entertaining bed-time read. Boyd's subject is shown to be, at times, a fascinating paradox in contemporary music - someone with integrity who follows his muse WHEREVER she takes him, regardless of the expectations of others - who has explored almost every genre of musical expression and tried (sometimes, arguably, unsuccessfully) to make them his own. This extensively-researched collection of FAQ and anecdotes follows Young's career through all his changes, with "memories to spare", "from Hank to Hendrix", and often from personal crises to personal triumphs.

It's a pleasure just OPENING this book, and starting what is essentially a voyage of discovery, so I don't wish to spoil the experience for the reader by giving away too much of the contents. But the Chapter Titles are a hoot, and wonderfully evocative, and the inclusion of a list of handy and informative Neil-based websites, combined with the bibliography, and a few quotes from musicians regarding the man himself, round off a great package. And did I mention the author's humour shining through?

Buy this book. You won't regret it. And remember: "Rust never sleeps..." Score: 4 out of 5 stars from me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Frequently Asked Questions Answered October 5, 2012
Format:Paperback
I read the other reviews and don't understand the low-rated ones. This book strikes a great balance between covering the highlights of a 40+ year career for new-to-Neil fans and providing more in-depth Neil stories for the veteran fan.
