5.0 out of 5 stars Dark music masterpiece., December 9, 2007
This review is from: Nekrolog 43 (Audio CD)
This cd is a truly masterpiece of dark music. I've heard a lot from this band, but this cd is the one that's stands above the others. If do you like this one, try the other german dark music masterpiece from Garden of Delight named The Darkest Hour...This two cds are the best ones that i've heard this year in the dark music field.

5.0 out of 5 stars If there ever truly is a 5 star ablum, this is it!, April 26, 2010

Adrian Hates is at his absolute best with this one. His abilities as a classically trained musician come across quite clearly. Musicians of his abilities and vision do not come around often. Obviously I am a huge fan, but this is the pinnacle of DOD. This is the album in which the guitars, synths, drums, vocals, poetry, and piano all come in the right amount. All the songs stand out, but none more so than "Son of A Thief", "Malice", "Tears of Joy", and the title track "Nekrolog 43". I can not over emphasize - WOW!

This was one of my favorite purchase last year and I think I have nearly worn this CD out. I never tire of listening to the interesting and complex music of Diary of Dreams and this CD has more grindy industrial beats on the dark side.

I found the album to be very enjoyable..but...I will admit that this is one of my favorite bands and I have yet to find one I like as much as them. I like the mix of goth/somewhat industrial sounds and I like the deep vocals.

5.0 out of 5 stars Oh...Cool!, November 25, 2010

This was my first album by Diary of Dreams, and when I first gave it a listen, I was unimpressed. It seemed to all run together, sound alike, and I was unsure on whether or not I liked Hates' choked vocals. Sure, it had some nice pieces, but overall I was wishing I had played it safe and bought from a more familiar artist instead.
But since I was in a rather secluded area and away from the majority of my CD collection for many weeks, I listened to my new music a few more times and tried to give it a chance.
Still unimpressed, but now resigned to the fact that I had spent sixteen bucks on an untried artist, and that we might as well get to know eachother.
I listened a few more times.
And a few more.
And a few more.

Needless to say, I now love this album, and I love it even more every time I listen to it. The songs, although they may sound alike at first, begin to latch onto you quickly enough, and the uniqueness of each track becomes more apparent. And it's so...SO...I don't know. Soul-grippingly GLOOMY, but in a good way. This is the kind of music that just goes through the listener like a cold winter wind in a wet climate. Mournful, sad, and sometimes just heartwrenching, but not manipulative. It isn't necessarily the lyrics that give it this effect, but just the music itself and Hates' voice. But it's also got some good hard beats to it like a good industrial album should, so it's not a total funeral.
Lyrics-wise, Nekrolog 43 is pretty decent, but I would warn those of you who harbor pet-peeves with lyrics that may or may not rhyme. The lyrics hardly matter much though, as the sheer awesome gloom-power of the music overrides it. The instrumentals include lots of synths, bangy industrial percussion, and some soft-but-hollow piano here and there. The tracks are all very well thought-out, and the best tracks are thankfully scattered liberally throughout the album rather than just being lumped in at the beginning. The first song starts out slow and menacing and then becomes mournful, but quickly blasts into head-bangy track "The Plague" to make sure you're awake. It then weaves in and out of various dark moods, and ends eerily.

Nekrolog 43 and Diary of Dreams in general is certainly worth your time and money if you are willing to take a chance and listen to it a few times to let it seep in. I shall definitely come back for more.

4.0 out of 5 stars The masters of goth do it again, June 4, 2008
This review is from: Nekrolog 43 (Audio CD)
Diary of Dreams just keep putting out great music and Nekrolog 43 is no different. A great representation of goth-industrial, with elements of both. This album is outstanding (as usual)!
