5.0 out of 5 stars Do these bad reviewers have a vendetta?
Style is personal, I understand that. I recently purchased a copy of Style at Home while visiting Atchison, KS. I was not expecting a store like Nell Hill's in a town of 10,000. It is true that the book does not give the full picture, but it does give some interesting ways to look at the way a home and its furnishings are setup. The book urges the reader to use things...

3.0 out of 5 stars Ideas from which to pick and choose
Mary Carol Garrity's store is the inspiration for this book and you can tell it as the pictures are filled with lots and lots of stuff! For most people, the style will probably be over the top, but what I like about the book is that it showcases many ideas from which you can pick and choose. If your style is traditional or romantic, you'll most likely find ideas for your...

It is true that the book does not give the full picture, but it does give some interesting ways to look at the way a home and its furnishings are setup. The book urges the reader to use things in new and interesting ways while not throwing out the history and the style of the things you have. It does not surprise me that some designers may not like this book, it puts some great tools in the hands of the people who would probably be paying them. If you ever get a chance, beat a path to Nell Hill's and check out the hospitality that is evident in the pictures that are displayed in this lovely book. And by the way, I am not old, I am 25! Mary Carol, keep up the good work!

5.0 out of 5 stars A beautiful book with great how-to's, September 14, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Nell Hill's Style At Home (Hardcover)
Nell Hill's in Atchison, Kansas is a great store.

But Mary Carol Garrity's book goes a step further and - with beautiful photographs and descriptive text - tells you exactly how you can take the things you already own and love and create a fabulous style.

This is pretty enough for a coffee table book and practical enough to pull out and use. There are no unattainable "Martha Stewart"-like crafts or projects.

Nell Hill's Style at Home is a great self-purchase or gift.

5.0 out of 5 stars An awe inspiring book!, November 30, 2004
This review is from: Nell Hill's Style At Home (Hardcover)
Well, I AM older!! Mary's book is now the NUMBER ONE book in my decorating library! I have amassed quite a collection of books on the subject of decorting, but not a one is as inspiring as this one. I follow Mary's belief of 'there are no rules when decorating, just things you love'. Her rooms are 'not just another pretty face', but rooms you can live in, while also enjoying the 'scenery'.

5.0 out of 5 stars My new decorating bible!!, May 21, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Nell Hill's Style At Home (Hardcover)
In preparation for our move into a larger pre-war New York apartment, I have pored through countless decorating books, only to walk away feeling as if I hadn't learned anything I didn't know already. This book, however, is completely different. Every page is full of amazing and completely do-able ideas. The rooms are decorated exactly the way I would have done, had I the imagination and creativity that Nell Hill obviously possesses in such abundance. I fully admit that I plan on adopting many of the decorating ideas in this book into my new home, and most importantly, I finally feel inspired! This is a fantastic book for anyone who loves traditional furnishings and has a desire to surround themselves with beauty every day. And as a final note: In response to those who deemed the book to "old" or not sufficiently urbane- I'm 30 and live in Manhattan, and I, for one, adore this book!

Nell Hill's Style at Home is just as chic, charming, and charismatic as Mary Carol Garrity. Those who have visited her two shops will not be disappointed in this book. It is chock full of beautiful photographs and practical decorating tips which epitomize Nell Hill's and G. Diebolts. I especially enjoyed visiting Mary Carol's home, via her photos. Her decorating style is similar to Charlotte Moss, with lots of charm, color, layering, sophistication, and personality. Wonderful book!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful!!, March 15, 2002
By

This review is from: Nell Hill's Style At Home (Hardcover)
I had the pleasure to meet Ms Garrity about three years ago in her wonderful shop. This book is a statement of comfort and beauty as is the shop that inspired it. The rooms portrayed are wonderfully cluttered with collected treasures and beautifull heirlooms. The basic style is "traditional", however Ms Garrity seems to be able to deviate from the normal rules of tradition. She links polished silver trays with rusty urns and garden tools. She allows whimsical touches among her beautiful artwork. It seems that while Ms Garrity has an appreciation for beauty she does away with the snobbery of some of her counterparts creating an overall look that is beautifull without being inaccessable.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely splendid, November 18, 2001

This review is from: Nell Hill's Style At Home (Hardcover)
I found this book simply marvelous. Most of my decorator friends crib shamelessly from this book. Reading the book, it's easy to see why--it's full of warm, inventive ways to make your house or apartment look great.
Mary Carol's no-frills approach is suitable in any situation, no matter how sophisticated or classy you are.

5.0 out of 5 stars A really useful decorating book, September 19, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Nell Hill's Style At Home (Hardcover)
I have bought dozens of decorating and home design books but this is the most useful one I have ever purchased. The author gives you doable tips on everything from creating beautiful tableaus on end tables to grouping and hanging pictures. The text of the book is engaging and conversational. The photographs are just spectacular. This book would make a wonderful hostess gift for anyone who enjoys nesting and decorating her home
