A biography of the woman who helped pioneer "stunt" reporting at the turn of the century.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 5-9-Determined to make a life for herself and help her family out of financial problems, Bly started her reporting career in Pittsburgh, PA, in 1885 for the Dispatch and went on to work for the New York World. Seemingly fearless, she traveled all over the world, most notably around it in 72 days, which Fredeen covers in detail. Always looking for a new challenge, and always looking for the limelight, Bly covered various social issues, including the women's suffrage movement. The book follows her many adventures and exploits from her stay at an insane asylum to report abuses to her time in Austria during World War I. Many black-and-white photos and reproductions of newspaper articles enliven the text. The engaging tone makes this title a good choice to recommend for an interesting read, while its attention to detail should provide solid research for reports. -Carol Fazioli, The Brearley School, New York City

From Kirkus Reviews

Slim enough to read in time for tomorrow's homework assignment, this accessible biography delivers just what it promises: an ``informative and inspiring'' story of the life of an influential individual. Readers familiar with Bly's ingenious brand of stunt journalism will be intrigued to learn that she was also an inventor and business owner as well as a suffragette with a social conscience. Black-and-white photographs, etchings, and copies of newspaper articles lend authenticity and immediacy to this fast-paced tale of girl-makes-good. Fredeen doesn't dwell on whether Bly was a happy woman in his necessarily brief overview of her life and times, but he relies upon the records to make real a young woman of innovation and spirit. This review is from: Nellie Bly: Daredevil Reporter (Lerner Biographies) (Hardcover)
This book is good for a 5th - 7th grader who is looking to find out more information on Nellie Bly. The biography, although short, gave more insight into the different accomplishments of Ms. Bly. The writer kept the reader interested with fun facts and clear writing, and was repetitive so that the information was easily followed and retained.
