False Marketing; These Things are Made of Toxic Plastic No.3,

This review is from: Nellie's NDB-E Dryer Balls, Regular Fabrics (Misc.)
"Nellies dryer balls are a natural way to soften your clothes. Use with our Organic Cotton or Bamboo face cloths to prevent harmful chemicals from coming into contact with your freshly cleansed skin." says the product line.
And sure, it *sounds* like a great idea, doesn't it? You can get that dryer-sheet softness without imbuing your clothes with cancer-causing, neurotoxic solvents such as toluene and styrene and the phthalate-containing fragrances found in traditional softeners, right? Somehow I don't think so. Here's the thing. These dryer balls are made of PVC, the most toxic plastic manufactured. It destroys the environment in its production, it is not recyclable and doesn't biodegrade, but by far its most relevant quality is that it leaches chemicals, in particular those additives that make it pliable. These often include some familiar ones: like lead and cadmium, and of course, phthalates like di 2-ethylhexyl, a carcinogen that is also causes reproductive and developmental defects. PVC leaches these chemicals throughout its life, but does so most effectively when exposed to heat. Heat, like that in a clothes dryer. Where do these chemicals leached by the super-heated PVC go? Well, your guess is as good as mine, but I'm willing to bet that some of it is ending up on those 'clean' clothes. Which seems like the polar opposite of what this product claims to be. If you're looking for a safe softening agent, put a little vinegar in the wash. It's cheap, it's non-toxic, and it's a known quantity that doesn't need fancy claims to conceal the truth.
