5.0 out of 5 stars A Pianist's Pianist, June 6, 2000
This review is from: Nelson Freire: Great Pianists of the 20th Century (Audio CD)
Nelson Freire's inclusion in this collection has brought him back to the recording studio and two new recordings, one with the Liszt concertos, another a live concert, have come out since. Sony has rereleased some budget CDs with him which, unfortunately, are badly recorded; avoid them. If you want to try his artistry, get instead this wonderful collection, plus the Phillips Duo disc which has Martha Argerich pairing up with friends on a number of works. Freire is famous for dreamy romantic works, but you'll love the subtlely and power of his Brahms 3d piano sonata as much as his Liszt or his Schumann. Among the releases of the "Great Pianists" collection, this one is a true gift which restores to the public an elusive but distinguished artist.

Nelson Freire's astonishing tecnique, beautiful phrasing and incredible passionate poetry no doubt make him one of the world's greatest pianists. One of the bests recordings on my shelf.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bravo!, December 4, 1999

This review is from: Nelson Freire: Great Pianists of the 20th Century (Audio CD)
Known for his Chopin's preludes recording, the brazilian pianist Nelson Freire made a magic interpretation of Lizst's Totentanz, playing fortes that can be heard even when all the orchestra plays. In the mazurkas, we make a quick journey to the Paris dance clubs and cafes of the 19th century. Verve!

4.0 out of 5 stars Wow!, March 30, 2000
This review is from: Nelson Freire: Great Pianists of the 20th Century (Audio CD)
I had never heard of Nelson Freire before hearing him play with Argerich in Carnegie Hall.

Nelson Freire is a hidden treasure ... this disc should be in your collection. I also recomend "Duo Piano Extraveganza," where he teams with Argerich.

5.0 out of 5 stars Appreaciate the underappreciated, November 6, 2008
This review is from: Nelson Freire: Great Pianists of the 20th Century (Audio CD)
Nelson Friere is known for his low number of concert appearances and therefore is not as known as some of the other great pianists. Despite this he is indeed one of the great pianists of the 20th century and this CD proves just that. The Chopin Scherzo in B Minor, and the Liszt Totentanz rank among my favorite interpretations of all time.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Schumann recording, May 25, 2000

This review is from: Nelson Freire: Great Pianists of the 20th Century (Audio CD)
You've never heard Schumann's "Fantasia op. 17" played like that. Só sua enorme timidez explica porque Nelson Freire não é uma celebridade mundial. Martha Argerich ha saputo scegliere il suo partner musicale. Er ist unglaublich ! Il faut lui connaître.

5.0 out of 5 stars Six Stars, December 30, 2001

If you play piano, or if you like concerts of piano, buy it! It's really fantastic. The liszt's totentanz it's simply uncredible. He played another "metamorphosis" of a valse by Johann Strauss. I've never seen nothing similar, it's really "animal". Another point is that I know Mr. Freire and, I don't know why, he doesn't like recording. The few freire's recordings is saved in concert. So, this is unique, fabulous recording. I repeat: just buy it!

This review is from: Nelson Freire: Great Pianists of the 20th Century (Audio CD)
Nelson Freire, un pianista brillante con gran musicalidad, es curioso que un pianista de tan alto nivel no sea más famoso. La interpretación de la Sonata Op. 5 de Brahms, es de lo mejor que he escuchado en mi vida.

Fuertemente recomendado.
