During my first trip to Japan, I would frequent many video game shops and I remember one title that I saw plenty of and that was "Angelique".

At the time, I didn't know anything about the series and when I looked online when I arrived back in the US, there was not much information (in English) about the series. But over a decade later, the Angelique franchise has since grown and even attracted video game fans worldwide.

"Angelique" a dating sim which has appeared on various consoles since its first appearance on the Super Famicom back in 1994 and most recently the game "Angelique Duet" on the Nintendo DS in 2006. In April 2008, the series received a reboot with a new storyline and new characters and aired on television with the title "Neo Angelique ~Abyss~" and aired on TV Tokyo for two seasons. The first season has been released in the US courtes of Sentai Filmworks.

"Neo Angelique ~Abyss~" is directed by Shin Katagai (who has worked as episode directo for "Eyeshield 21'), series composition by Yuka Yamada ("Mushi-Shi", "Himawari!", "Saint October" and "Harukanaru Toki no Naka de ~Maihitoyo~" movie). Original character designs are by the original "Angelique" manga and TV series Kairi Yura and character designs by Maki Fujioka ("Itazura na Kiss", "Corda D'Oro") and anime production by Yumeta Company ("Angelique" OVA series and known for their inbetween animation work for many popular anime series in Japan inc. "Fullmetal Alchmeist", "Eureka Seven", "Gurren Lagann", "XxxHOLIC" and many more titles).

For "Neo Angelique Abyss", the story takes place in the world of Arcadia.

I love this for well developed characters that grow and change, switching their beliefs around as they all come to rely one each other. These twists just go on and on right through to the ending which did feel a little abrupt. It is unfortunate that there will probably not be anymore with these characters.

Hard to get me to watch action anime, and while rough in places, this one stole my heart.

That Amazon.com has this with original soundtrack and all the voices music and song go together with each character's personality so well just takes it over the top for me. Poor english dub this is not! A rare find at amazon. Kudos!

No experience with the video games nor anime, but taking a look now that we have a ROKU. I suspect that if you watch enough anime, it'd get pretty hard to differentiate characters since everyone seems to be using the same template for the most part. I'm assuming it has more to do with production costs than talent and creativity on the part of the artists.

About the series, though, I was truly surprised by the quality of the writing. I didn't expect to find so many layers and so much "philosophical" depth. For example, considering its complex origins, "Erbos" is especially interesting; not just a "rogue entity", but the result of human beings' propensity to thoughtlessly "demonize" others. Considering Erbos' feminine nature and histories of protective intent, perhaps the initial response to a child's pleas for help was more than just an evil thing looking for a residence?

To cut to the chase, I truly enjoyed watching the series.

For Amazon Instant Videos: It would be nice if you could upload the full season to your watchlist, rather than having to hunt down individual episodes that are out of order and mixed in amongst other videos. It appears that this is the case with a lot of TV Series listings.

I didn't like the ending, but loved that there was an ending. There are too many animes with no resolution. A few episodes were total tear jerkers. I love the total dynamic of men sacrificing themselves for the woman thats willing to sacrifice right next to them. Quote from the show paraphrased: To have power to do something and not use it is a sin.
I love almost anything with a message behind it. The main character wasn't the coolest, but at least she wasn't useless as some leading female characters can be. Her gift solves problems without violence which to me made her less interesting. Noble but less interesting.
My rating was 5 but now it's 4 after thinking about Rayne's character. They tried their hardest to make his gun play interesting but it just wasn't as interesting and physical combat. Anyway those are a few of my thoughts.

I became an anime fan in the 60's watching Astro Boy and Gigantor. While recovering from an illness, I gave in to my childhood preferences and checked out some anime. This was one of two I watched from beginning to end. A true honor story of a genuinely good person willing to sacrifice herself for her friends and world in order to protect it from a great evil. It's an anime and there is a lot of self reflection and the story often slows in order to 'set a mood', but when it was over, I was glad I had watched it. There's no nudity, sexual innuendo, or the over the top distortions often used to show emotion and embarrassment in this genre. Over all, it was a sweet story and for a person like me, a sucker for an honor story, worth the time.
