During my first trip to Japan, I would frequent many video game shops and I remember one title that I saw plenty of and that was "Angelique".

At the time, I didn't know anything about the series and when I looked online when I arrived back in the US, there was not much information (in English) about the series. But over a decade later, the Angelique franchise has since grown and even attracted video game fans worldwide.

"Angelique" a dating sim which has appeared on various consoles since its first appearance on the Super Famicom back in 1994 and most recently the game "Angelique Duet" on the Nintendo DS in 2006. In April 2008, the series received a reboot with a new storyline and new characters and aired on television with the title "Neo Angelique ~Abyss~" and aired on TV Tokyo for two seasons. The first season has been released in the US courtes of Sentai Filmworks.

"Neo Angelique ~Abyss~" is directed by Shin Katagai (who has worked as episode directo for "Eyeshield 21'), series composition by Yuka Yamada ("Mushi-Shi", "Himawari!", "Saint October" and "Harukanaru Toki no Naka de ~Maihitoyo~" movie). Original character designs are by the original "Angelique" manga and TV series Kairi Yura and character designs by Maki Fujioka ("Itazura na Kiss", "Corda D'Oro") and anime production by Yumeta Company ("Angelique" OVA series and known for their inbetween animation work for many popular anime series in Japan inc. "Fullmetal Alchmeist", "Eureka Seven", "Gurren Lagann", "XxxHOLIC" and many more titles).

For "Neo Angelique Abyss", the story takes place in the world of Arcadia.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pleasantly surprised! February 2, 2013
Format:Amazon Instant Video
No experience with the video games nor anime, but taking a look now that we have a ROKU. I suspect that if you watch enough anime, it'd get pretty hard to differentiate characters since everyone seems to be using the same template for the most part. I'm assuming it has more to do with production costs than talent and creativity on the part of the artists.

About the series, though, I was truly surprised by the quality of the writing. I didn't expect to find so many layers and so much "philosophical" depth. For example, considering its complex origins, "Erbos" is especially interesting; not just a "rogue entity", but the result of human beings' propensity to thoughtlessly "demonize" others. Considering Erbos' feminine nature and histories of protective intent, perhaps the initial response to a child's pleas for help was more than just an evil thing looking for a residence?

To cut to the chase, I truly enjoyed watching the series.

For Amazon Instant Videos: It would be nice if you could upload the full season to your watchlist, rather than having to hunt down individual episodes that are out of order and mixed in amongst other videos. It appears that this is the case with a lot of TV Series listings.

One of the best anime that I've seen so far. I recommend this to all who like action without hentai.

5.0 out of 5 stars A sparkling Gem December 20, 2013
Format:Amazon Instant Video
I love this for well developed characters that grow and change, switching their beliefs around as they all come to rely one each other. These twists just go on and on right through to the ending which did feel a little abrupt. It is unfortunate that there will probably not be anymore with these characters.

Hard to get me to watch action anime, and while rough in places, this one stole my heart.

That has this with original soundtrack and all the voices music and song go together with each character's personality so well just takes it over the top for me. Poor english dub this is not! A rare find at amazon. Kudos!

5.0 out of 5 stars Interesting story line April 23, 2014
By Bear
Format:Amazon Instant Video
The story line of this program starts off slow, but after the first four episodes, it gets interesting, and you start to wonder who is a good guy or bad guy. by the end of the season you find that it is up to you and you alone to make the right decision.

4.0 out of 5 stars pretty good anime April 2, 2014
Format:Amazon Instant Video
First, I appreciate this is subtitled and not dubbed, way better that way. This is a fairly interesting anime, it kept my attention throughout although I do wish it had more of a one love kind of thing rather than everyone adoring the main character and she caring for everyone else. Although maybe its done that way since she's suppose to be a future queen, who knows. Either way it was enjoyable to watch, didn't feel like I was wasting my time on it.

5.0 out of 5 stars the essence of friendship
It's good to see more significance placed on relationships than material possessions. Things can be repurchased, but a friend is often once in a lifetime.

4.0 out of 5 stars wish this was dubbed rather than subtitled
I have only viewed episode one, but I enjoy the beginning of the story. Characters seem like they will be well developed. I am very likely to continue watching this anime.
