5.0 out of 5 stars The best MMORPG I've played.
I'll start out by saying that I've only been playing Neocron for a couple of weeks (it only came out in the US 3 or 4 weeks ago.) So far, I completely love the game. I've played other MMORPGs (Asheron's Call, Anarchy Online, Dark Age of Camelot), but Neocron is by far my favorite.

I am a big fan of the cyberpunk, post-apoclyptic setting, and Neocron does it...

This game is one of the most buggy games i have ever played, the customer service sux, getting accounts created and paid for sux. First time i have ever had to work to get a company to take my moeny for the product. The business end of this company is worthless and needs to go back to school.

Having said that this game is also one of the most fun games i have...

5.0 out of 5 stars The best MMORPG I've played., December 9, 2002

I'll start out by saying that I've only been playing Neocron for a couple of weeks (it only came out in the US 3 or 4 weeks ago.) So far, I completely love the game. I've played other MMORPGs (Asheron's Call, Anarchy Online, Dark Age of Camelot), but Neocron is by far my favorite.

I am a big fan of the cyberpunk, post-apoclyptic setting, and Neocron does it beautifully (both in the specific sense of graphics and sound, and in the more general sense.) I think the developers at Reakktor learned a lot from the experiences of past MMORPGs, and made great strides toward solving many of the biggest problems. PKing is one area where I think they did a great job:
Everyone starts with a "Law Enforcer Implant" - basically an item that prevents them from damaging OR being damaged by other players. This implant reduces EXP and money gain, and makes it harder to use the items in the game (higher stat requirements.) Removing the implant is an easy task, but takes long enough that you won't do it accidentally. If you leave your LE in, you will never have to worry about being PKed. However, once you take your LE out, you can be PKed, but *only* in certain areas - which do not include most of the newbie areas.

Neocron also includes a very robust tradeskill / crafting / whatever you want to call it system. Tradeskills are very important, as many items cannot be bought in stores, or are a) prohibitively expensive, or b) very poor quality.

A very exciting feature of the game is the Outpost system. Outside the city, there are outposts of five kinds: Labs, Forts, Uplinks, Mines, and Factories. A Clan in the game (an organization of players) can go and capture one of these outposts. All the players in that Clan will then receive a bonus to the appropriate skill when at the outpost. This can be vital to constructing high level or high quality items. The outposts are one of the driving forces behind the PvP activity in the game.

I'll conclude by saying that this game is, as every MMORPG I know has been, a work in progress. There are still bugs in the game (though recovering from them is usually painless), and the devs continue to release patches tweaking the existing content and adding new content. Please try this game, but do understand that it is early in its lifetime!

This game is one of the most buggy games i have ever played, the customer service sux, getting accounts created and paid for sux. First time i have ever had to work to get a company to take my moeny for the product. The business end of this company is worthless and needs to go back to school.

Having said that this game is also one of the most fun games i have ever played. The players are great the gameplay even with all the bugs and lack of info o nthings is fun and has so much potential. The overall design is brillant.

If you can stand the frustration of dealing with the company and bugs that have been there for years you'll find an enjoyable game to play. If i have to deal with thier customer service or mods/admins not answering questions anymore i'll be one step closer to canceling my account.

Good luck!

5.0 out of 5 stars Think Blade Runner, Cyberpunk type game., February 21, 2004

Think Blade Runner, Cyberpunk type game. But well done and fully realized in every way. & NOT someones idea that sounded good but never got to reality. Neocron lives, baby!

In this game everything means something. You understand what I'm saying!?

Things like,
Vehicles.
Factions.
Clans.
Trading. with real people in the game.
Saying hello or yes and your player waving and nodding and it goes on and on...
Your own personal E-Mail used between players actually in the game like at your desk in your apartment or at terminals around the entire world..
An in game forum, also one at a terminal in the city or you apartment desk.
Running and jumping, damage taking damage, constructing, salvaging, repairing, hacking, to much to remember, all getting better throughout the game as you choose to allocate your points to your which stats. Etc...

This is a real Man and Woman's game. For the Mature... thank you very much.

I can go on and on but just don't have the writing skills.. Sorry.

I was so sick of tiger & lizard head people and purple furry orcs and goofy looking monsters in all these other games, hint hint EQ SWG AO & Lineage II where even the orcs are good looking and the Elves run around in what looks like their panties? ... Even the Newest Online games are really bad, gee lets stand around and look how good we look talking to eachother games.

5.0 out of 5 stars Neocron - update, January 9, 2004
This review is from: Neocron (CD-ROM)
Since there haven't been any recent reviews, I want to put my two-cents in, since I've been playing NC for four months now.
This is a great game, although, as others have said, there are occasional "crashes to desktop" or FRE's. While these can be frustrating, the game itself is quite engrossing. You have the choice of four character types - Private Eye, Spy, Gen-tank or Psi monk, with several subsets of each. Besides fighting and hunting, you can become a trade-skiller, building better items for sale or trade. Also, there are eleven different factions you can join, each with its own political agenda.
While there are PK'rs among the ranks, the game is based on OP-war, PvP style fighting and new players have the option of retaining their LE (law enforcer) implanted chips to mitigate this, if they choose.
Another plus not usually mentioned is that there are five world-wide servers - one German, one French and three English-speaking. Each has it's own distinct flavor, if you will, i.e., Saturn (English) allows you to create up to four characters and has more PK'rs, while Pluto (English) allows one character, but seems to have a more cooperative tone, IMO. (That isn't to say that there aren't many good folks on Saturn, some just get into role-playing more than others).
Definitely try the demo and check out the forums at neocron.com, but you owe it to yourself to look into the "future world" of Neocron.

I followed the development of this game for over a year, and due to a botched US release have only been playing for a few weeks now. I have to say that Neocron was born of a brilliant concept, but it has been spiraling downward faster and faster since retail release.

I love Neocron, but its terribly frustrating to play. If your not ready to dump alot of time into a game that looks like its not destined to survive long, hold off on buying this game. ...

Before you buy go read the official forum and see the total chaos that errupts from week to week. Ive had to re-focus my character 3 times now, thats once for each of the 3 patches that have come out since Ive had the game.

The worst part is that many of the beta players who claim the game worked fairly well before its release are leaving in droves as the game inches closer to "totaly unplayable" day by day.

If all that doesnt convince you, try to understand that if I could be playing Neocron right now instead of writing this review, I would be. Unfortunatly after dumping 3 hours into the game last night and accomplishing zero due to severe stability issues, I have decided not to even try this evening as all the same complaints are still being voiced on the official forum. :)

Reakktor should have sold the game to an american firm, cause they seem to be in way over their heads.

5.0 out of 5 stars Neocron rocks., May 7, 2004

Neocron was my first venture into the world of MMORPG, and what a fantastic choice it was! I've been playing for over 7 months now, and apart from one glitch that the customer service people handled really well, can see myself playing for another 7 months.

The 4 character classes, and the strengths and weaknesses of each give a huge variety in game play options. I have high level characters in each class, and I'm still finding new things to do on each of them.

The political system within the game is complex, and adds to the overall feel of the game. The outpost war/PvP system makes for an added challenge.

Try out the 10 day trial, and you wont be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars BEST MMO EVER, March 31, 2004
By
Joran (Goleta, CA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Neocron (CD-ROM)
I played EQ for two years. I played DAoC for about 2 months, I played AO for a month. I have played many MMO's and neocron takes the cake as far as shear fun gameplay.

Combat is not some boring Click and sit game like most MMO's there is no auto target, or autofollow. you actually must aim to attack.

It has a few bugs(crash to desktop, synch) but since it takes all of 25 seconds to get back in game(unlike most mmo's) crashes arent that big of a deal. I have been playing for well over a year without expieriencing any losses due to bugs(no lost stats or equiptment) no one i actually know in game has had any problems with losses from bugs either.

Its probably one of the cheapest MMO's out there too. which is a Very good thing.

you can try a free 10day trial.

They have game mechanisms to protect you from PvP and PK's if you do not wish to participate. most of the community is more than happy to help out new players with money and equiptment(even enemy new players)

the only downside is that in off peak times the server populations can be pretty low

oh yeah its also the only mmorpg that allows you to swear in game so it may not be appropriate for any little kids...and theres strippers...but thats another story

for 10.00 for the game and a free month you should definatly get this game

This game is great! I spent the better part of the night waiting for the download to start. Once I got the demo, I played it over and over. This is my kind of game! If you have ever played System Shock 2, you'll love this MMORPG! This game has serious potential!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Game, November 27, 2002

This review is from: Neocron (CD-ROM)
I played the beta. It is a fun game and a nice change from Everquest. Zoning times are hardly noticable. Everyone starts out with their own apartment with storage space. Parents, be warned that this is really an adult game. There are "seedy" areas of the city with nudity and bad language amok. :)

I'd really like to order the game, however can't seem to find anyplace in the US that sells it?
