5.0 out of 5 stars The 1st of Three Key Evangelion Soundtracks
This is "Neon Genesis Evangelion", the first of the three fundamental Eva soundtracks, with 23 tracks and clocking in at 58 minutes (and 2 seconds). This soundtrack covers much of the basic music heard in the beginning of the anime series. An excellent collection. EXCELLENT.

3.0 out of 5 stars Who in the production team is a 007 fan?
Did anyone else noticed that track 16 "Decisive Battle" is just a rearrangement (er, rip-off?) of John Barry's "007"?

Although for Japanimation soundtracks I prefer a more ethereal sound such as those done by Yoko Kanno, the music here complemented the series. In fact, without first seeing the series/movies the music can sound rather generic...

This is "Neon Genesis Evangelion", the first of the three fundamental Eva soundtracks, with 23 tracks and clocking in at 58 minutes (and 2 seconds). This soundtrack covers much of the basic music heard in the beginning of the anime series. An excellent collection. EXCELLENT.

The lyrics pamphlet includes thought-invoking words from Director Hideaki Anno, Director of Music Shiro Sagisu, and two Assistant Directors. Shinji and Eva Unit-01 are on the cover. Includes Japanese and English translation lyrics for the long version of Cruel Angel's Thesis, and words to Fly Me to the Moon. The rest are credits. On the back of the case is a scene with Eva-01 walking away from a smoky explosion site.

A runthrough of the tracks:
#1) A Cruel Angel's Thesis <Director's Edit. Version> -- A longer version of the intro of the anime. It runs through the main verses once, then goes through a bridge, and runs through the main verses once more.
#2) Fly Me to the Moon -- A very standard version of FMttM. Long version, not TV size.
#3) Angel Attack -- Suspenseful action music. Very typically played during several Angel attacks throughout the anime series.
#4) Rei I -- Ahhh, Rei! Serene and beautiful music in the name of Rei. Sad and peaceful piano and violin. It will remind you of the scenes with Rei, who herself is serenely beautiful.
#5) Hedgehog's Dilemma -- Also sad, with acoustic guitar and high notes from a piano. Will fill you with the blues.
#6) Barefoot in the Park -- A bit more upbeat, with a hint of jazz.
#7) Ritsuko -- I don't remember this from the anime, but it's fine. Doesn't particularly remind me of Evangelion, nor Ritsuko, but the music is fine. Plucky guitar and piano.
#8) Misato -- Oh yes, this is Misato. Remember the cutesy music playing on those mornings when Misato plops down at the table and downs an entire can of beer in front of Shinji? Yeah, this is it. Very upbeat.
#9) Asuka Strikes! -- Music from Asuka acting high and mighty (while Shinji just gapes). it's almost country, with what sounds like a fiddle, and country guitar.
#10) NERV -- A rather imposing tune, like descending into the Geofront and walking towards the giant pyramid that is NERV.
#11) TOKYO-3 -- This is the wonder that Shinji feels while first catching a glimpse of the massive Geofront from above.
#12) I. Shinji -- Almost like some sort of funeral march, music from a dramatic moment. Oppressing piano, backed up with a violin.
#13) EVA-01 -- Can't describe... Slightly happy, backed up with snare march.
#14) A Step Forward Into Terror -- Starts off grand, music from an Eva rising from defeat and about to make a winning move.
#15) EVA-02 -- Similar to the previous two songs.
#16) Decisive Battle - A familiar bass beat.
#17) EVA-00 -- Starting here, the music becomes harsh and woeful. Rei's Eva music is ruthless, cold. I love it ^^.
#18) The Beast -- Except for the pause in between tracks, you'd never notice track 18 wasn't a continuation of track 17. Gets even faster
#19) Marking Time, Waiting for Death -- This is quiet, eerie music. It builds up, then breaks out in a wave of spent suspense.
#20) Rei II -- More Rei! Woeful violins again remind you of Rei's quiet beauty.
#21) Fly Me to the Moon -- Long version, no lyrics.
#22) Next Episode <30 Second Version> -- Music playing when Shinji and Asuka must live and breathe together, prepping for their synchronized fight with an angel.
#23) Fly Me to the Moon <YOKO TAKAHASHI Acid Bossa Version> -- Background has cutesy exotic percussion (bongos, congas, that thing that makes noise when you shake it...) and upbeat guitar, like ska or reggae. Full version.

Keep in mind that Evangelion, Evangelion II, and Evangelion III are a sort of set, and that this soundtrack alone is by no means meant to cover all the =brilliant= pieces heard in the Evangelion anime series. Perhaps it is best to purchase this or Evangelion II first. Thank Gainax for these US releases - otherwise I'd still be coughing up money for those expensive imports. I recommend all three, you really can't go wrong; the music is to die for ^^.

Cheers!

Lover of Rei. =^_^=

5.0 out of 5 stars My new favorite CD, May 22, 2000
This review is from: Neon Genesis Evangelion (Audio CD)
I bought this CD, even though it cost fifty bucks, because Evangelion's music is awesome. The first track, Evangelion's theme song, is the meat & potatoes of the CD. When translated, the song title is "The Thesis of the Cruel Angel". The second track, "Fly Me To the Moon," is hauntingly calm for such a series. The song plays after each episode in the series. It's like the calm after the storm, and before another. The rest of the tracks are instrumental music from the series except for the last one, another remix of "Fly Me To the Moon." The only song which I dislike is track nine, Asuka's theme. It simply does not fit into this CD. This is the music from the first few episodes. My friend and I like listening to the music on this disc and reminicing on when this music was played in the series. Overall, a fine CD. Good beat, great music. Only problem is the price.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beatiful and greatly done music, April 24, 2005
Neon Gensis Evangelion Vol. I is my favorite among the set of three main soundtracks, the instrumental music is simply some of the best you'll find on any Anime Soundtrack, it only covers a small portion of the series, but it's definately the best portion.

I totally recommend it and, if you can only buy one the Neon Gensis Evangelion albums, this is it.

5.0 out of 5 stars "Zankoku no tenshi no thesis...", December 20, 1999
This review is from: Neon Genesis Evangelion (Audio CD)
WoW! Talk about intense music! This CD set is the almost perfect accesory for any EVA/anime fan. This set compiles all the music from the TV anime series into 4 discs. My reason for loving it... I listened to the CD's before I went to bed one night and I found myself staring out the window into the stars beyond. I swore I could see the Evangelion series playing right before my eyes -- that's how individualistic the music is. And because I understood the series, I could fit the story and the music together. At one point, I was in tears because it hit me in a soft spot. Want inspiration? Get the CDs!

4.0 out of 5 stars The soundtrack from the most contraversial anime series, September 23, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Neon Genesis Evangelion (Audio CD)
Now the music in this soundtrack ranges from pop to just Background music . It is pretty new in it's essence and will surprise many listeners to its origial content . Althrough some people would call this music "CHEESY", I for one do not think so , for since I have seen every episode of the series it brings back a lot of memories for me ,of the series and of the music . The emotions of the series is all transferred into this brillant and award winning soundtrack that will satisfiy a big range of listeners . There is for instance tracks that you don't really listen to for pleasure unless your into battle music and then there are tracks that deserves pop status . There are variations of FLY ME TO THE MOON from different artists and so on . All in all an very enjoyable cd and it's well worth it's price for me a big evangelion fan . I highly recommand it if your into anime music or just want something different and enjoyable then neon genesis evangelion soundtrack vol one is for you.

This CD has got everything. If you're an Eva fan, you'll recognize all of the songs. It's got the opening theme(Cruel Angel's Thesis), three versions (one is instrumental) of the closing theme(Fly me to the Moon), the song they play at breakfast time (Misato), the song they play when they talk about the next episode (Decisive Battle), and even the song you hear when Shinji is thinking inside his Eva. You'll love this CD, so buy it now.

4.0 out of 5 stars If classical music is your thing..., October 22, 2002
By
Tenchi (Mesa, AZ USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Neon Genesis Evangelion (Audio CD)
Being a huge fan of the series, I rushed to pick this one up, and was overall, quite glad I did. The music quality is great, and the selection of background music ranges from loud and triumphant, to soft and gothic. It does a great job of satisfying any mood. I suggest that you pick this one up right away, even if you aren't a diehard fan of the show, the music is truly a wonderful experience. (Even if there are three different renditions of "Fly Me To The Moon")

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best soundtracks to best tv series ever, August 3, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Neon Genesis Evangelion (Audio CD)
I can't believe people who are buying EVA are buying *backstreet boys*!! ugh!! The 5 stars are for being exceptional as far as anime music goes. I don't pretend to compare this stuff to pure classical or pure pop music--this music cannot stand on its own--but as a soundtrack it is excellent. You will probably not appreciate most of the tracks fully if you have not seen the series, with the exception of two tracks which embody the spirit of EVA and are beautiful as well--Hedgehog's Dilemmna and Crystalline night. humorous elevator music sounding tracks are barefoot in the park, misato's theme, waking up in morning, and a moment when tension breaks. Each track has a lot of character and storyline supporting it, which is why this makes such great soundtrack music. If you got to this page through the search engine--I know you've been scrounging around for those mp3's!! Buy the CD!! Help support EVA!
