The story itself is kind of biblical in nature and produces an interesting controversy of life.

Having never seen the anime, my perspective on the book is probably different from the average reader. Upon first reading, I found Volume 1 to have a relatively simple plot hiding behind the complex scenes and characterizations. Perhaps this is the beauty of Evangelion: it seems so difficult to understand, but at the most basic level it's just another case of humanity trying to preserve itself. And yet this series presents the classic dilemma with such a unique twist.
Shinji obviously has some major issues, and with a father like Gendo Ikari, it's understandable. The tension between father and son is so strong; in fact the interactions/conflicts between all the human characters provide a quiet turbulence throughout the story.
One complaint, however: Evangelion is Sadamoto's first full-length manga, and it shows. Although most of the artwork is certainly up to par, the fight scenes between the evangelion and the angel in Vol. 1 were difficult to follow. Perhaps for someone who had seen the anime, this would be not so much of a problem, but since I'm not too familiar with the Who's-Who of Big Honkin' Robots, I couldn't always figure out who was hitting who. Otherwise, Neon Genesis Evangelion is an excellent story and highly recommended for those who like something that's stretch their minds.

I own the DVD series and when I saw this volume of manga I had to pick it up. It is interesting and the artwork is excellent. But I found that it didn't really offer alot new. A few scraps here and there, much of which was hinted at during the series.
If you don't want the DVD series but want to know all about it then this is a good buy, if you are a evangelion nut then buy it. But if you own the series and are just happy with it then I would not buy this as well.

When I found out that Evangelion had a manga series, I was really excited. Because this was the series that really hooked me into the anime world.

The year is 2015, the Antarctica ice caps have melted and flooded most of he earth. Mysterious monsters, code named ANGELS, attack the small city of Tokyo-3. The world's only hopes against the ANGEL'S attacks are robotic life forms codenamed EVANGELION or `EVA' for short. The pilots... fourteen year old kids! (It's anime! They always rely on kids!)

After reading the book, I was very satisfied with it. However, watching the series and then reading the book, I found it very distraught for me. The story writer and illustrator Yoshiyuki Sadamoto, who worked on character design in the anime series, portrayed some of the characters in a different way than in the series. But the story itself was very original in some ways and also, in some parts, stays true to the anime series. But I suggest the series over the book. So if you had to decide between the book or the DVD, go with the DVD first, than the book.

The first volume of Neon Genesis Evangelion gets 4 stars out of 5.

My name is Amone. Adios!

Are you bored of looking at tiring anime? well I was until I luckily stumbled upon this book. Neon Genesis Evangelion is definatly a mixture of origonality and pure genius. All you thrill seakers in the anime world this is your exit have a pit stop in the world where angel's the distroyers of our world are over come by the infamous evangelions extreamly advanced technological robots made to syncronize with teen agers to save the human race. If any more is told then you would be mad at me after reading the first book but don't think I told you all of the first book I just told you .001% of it.

So U say U want a good graphic novel? This is it! This is one of the best manga series around! The author, Yoshiyuki Sadamoto is one of Japan's finest artists and his ability to spin the most intricate tale and create the most gorgeous characters (he really knows how to develop characters! They each have their own stories!) and THEN draw them is ab"soul"utely AmAzInG! *^.^* The first volume kind of introduces you to the world of Neo-Tokyo and then takes off right there into the story. The story itself is kind of biblical in nature and produces an interesting controversy of life. This I refuse to tell. But you are introduced to one of the best sci-fi/anime stories around so pay attention to detail because if U aren't careful, you could end up a little confused. Once U start reading, you just can't stop! But oh...when U finally understand the whole story, it REALLY is a beautiful web spun by a one-of-a-kind dreamer. U go Yoshiyuki Sadamoto! Read Evangelion, and be swept into another world...

Neon Genesis Evangelion:
If you like sadness, comedy, really cool robots, high-quality drawings and very good characters, this is the series for you!
The story: Shinji Ikari is summoned to NERV headquarters, a research organization. When he arrives, he finds out he has to run one of the robots, Unit- 01, to protect the city from monsters they call "Angels".
The main reason I liked this series is because the characters are really great. When I read a book, and the characters stink, I really don't get much out of it. When, like in Neon Genesis Evangelion, the characters are great, it really makes the story better.
There are 6 volumes in this series, so far. It isn't finished yet. I want the next to come out so badly!
This is a series that you should definitely consider buying.
