The latest Tooth and Nail hype machine is Neon Horse, another so-called mystery band where people don't know who the members of the band is. Those into Stavesacre will immediately recognize Mark Salomon as 1/2 of the vocal duo. And it isn't too hard to imagine Jason Martin of Starflyer 59 doing guitars. Beyond that things are a bit murkier, member wise.

3.0 out of 5 stars not amazing, but interesting
its the type of music that will grow on you....Every time I listen to it, I can hear the influence of the late '70s and early '80s.

Overall, it is solid but not amazing.

The music is fairly rock and roll, throwing back to the hey-dey of rock music. However, rather than being a simple clone (unlike a fair number of the current throwbacks), Neon Horse is captivating for the simple reason that the choruses are huge. Salomon's voice is gripping in this role and context.

The album feels a bit short and could have stretched some of the songs out farther, in my opinion. However, it is definitely worthwhile picking up for the music, and not simply as an acknowledgment of the hype.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best new CD I've heard in a while..., May 9, 2007
This review is from: Neon Horse (Audio CD)
What does Neon Horse remind me of? Well, put Showbread, Starflyer 59, Stavesacre, Modest Mouse, and The B-52s in a blender, and you'll have a taste...

When I heard "Cuckoo" for the first time yesterday I was instantly hooked. The music is familiar, yet a completely new style. I went to four different stores before finally finding the album, and I've been listening to it non-stop today. Every song is decent, and most of them are amazing.

I agree that Mark Salomon (or however you spell it) and Jason Martin are probably in the band. The guitars sound very similar to the most recent Starflyer and Brothers Martin albums. But who is the third? The world may never know...

'Neon Horse' immediately hits as unusual and familiar at the same time. It's got this good ol' rock 'n' roll sound, mixed with modern day tinges and distortion and vocals. Many of the tracks ride into the same territory as Queens of the Stone Age or Eagles of Death Metal, yet still different... maybe less stoner and more trashy, if that makes sense? Mark Salomon and Jason Martin have GOT to be involved, but I can't place the higher pitched vocals. Either way, this record is a lot of fun. It kicks up a dust storm and leaves the party in shambles in no time. Each song is similar, in my mind, to the Ramones... the tracks are fairly short (only one song clocks in over the 3 minute mark) but very to the point. They get the job done and don't mess around with fluff... Very refreshing.

Other reviews have nailed the sound down, but I just had to chime in and give my two cents on the quality of this release. This is one of the more interesting rock cds that I have heard in a long time. Great songwriting - there isn't a bad track on here. The songs stick in your head and are just plain fun.

4.0 out of 5 stars fun, April 11, 2010

Neon Horse, by Neon Horse, is an enjoyable piece of musical craftsmanship. The energy combined with often not-to-serious, tongue-in-cheek lyrics makes this album one you can dance to (if that's your thing) in your room, or with a group of friends.

4.0 out of 5 stars Unique and Worth a Listen!, June 21, 2009

A few of the songs on this cd (Crazy Daisy, Cuckoo, and Little Lamb) are really awesome, but the rest of the cd wasn't quite the same. Not at all bad, but not quite what I was expecting.

I like the southern rock sound too and they are definitely unique and well worth a listen - Especially the singles.

I would recommend this to anyone who wants to hear Mark Salomon's voice in a new light!

4.0 out of 5 stars Very catchy, May 20, 2009

The first time I heard "Cuckoo!" and especially "Little Lamb," I never thought I'd buy this album. The vocals were different and borderline annoying, but after a few more listens the hooks pulled me in and never let go.

That is what makes this album great, super catchy songs that grab you and don't let go - that is, for a while, at least. The "replay value" of the music is not so high. I find myself skipping the songs more often these days when they pop up on a mix. But there are definitely songs worth buying on this album and I suggest it to anyone looking for something refreshing and interesting.

4.0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly Good Rock Album ( for Christians), November 21, 2007

I "discovered" Neon Horse accidently and was taken aback when I found out they were Christian rock !!...what the ??
Great record, short well arranged tunes with very theatrical vocals over pretty solid guitar riffs. ...and catchy as anything. Tried getting "Cuckoo" out of my head for days only to find it replaced by "Crazy Daisy' ...Am I having a religious experience here or what ?
Recommended.
