5.0 out of 5 stars Schizophrenic avantgarde-metal this is!, April 2, 2002

Wow, this is a very, very strange band. It originally comes from the Norwegian black metal scen, but like some other bands (Arcturus, Ulver, Fleurety) is it far more interrested in experimenting with new and progressive sounds than many other (black) metal bands. This band is unique in every way. It integrates progressive and symphonic elements in their metal, together with strange and very complex songstructures. Theu sound very bombastic, even a little theatrical or operette-alike, but they don't sound like those bombastic gothic bands or something. No, they let their keyboards make the most complex and weird soundscapes, they sing both threatening and bombastic, and their lyrics are weird and even funny. Listen to CK2 Chanel no.6 for instance, or to Backpacka Baba (great cynical lyrics!): "white men came from across the see, and changed my underdeveloped diper, white men came across to me, and slashed my head with tabloid paper!". You see, this kind of lyrics: statements against society, consumerism etcetera. Listening to this cd is something you have to experience, this band is so unique, even in the (progressive) metal scenes! Who likes bands like Borknagar, Arcturus, Ulver or black metal like Emperor or Saytricon, should listen to this at least once in it's lifetime!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great!, April 15, 2005
This review is from: Neonism (Audio CD)
I loved this album more than any other album Solefald has made.
The style is somehow similar to Arcturus (Masquerade Infernale Time) but with so much more feeling and rythm changes.
This album really has a diverse style from the first to the last track.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Music Masterpeice, January 16, 2006

This album is one of the rare few I truly belive to be a masterpeice. This album is amazing. Solefald's Neonism finds ways to push the Black Metal genre farther through what I call a "Fashionable State". If you're looking for a new metal sound, and tired of the traditional "satanic" overtues...Solefald accomplishes that. perfectly.

5.0 out of 5 stars Avant garde black metal masterpiece, March 24, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Neonism (Audio CD)
This is quite possibly the best avant garde black metal album ever produced besides Arcturus's "The Sham Mirrors". If you think you have heard everything that can be done in metal, listen to this.

5.0 out of 5 stars avantgarde extreme music. designer rock n' roll., February 13, 2006

Solefald's Neonism... what the hell is this and how have I not heard this before now!?! I've been really bored with a lot of music lately, and this just kicked my ass into a whole new perspective on what can be achieved with not only metal, but with modern music. Neonism is truly independant voice, a powerful statement. The liner notes in the booklet says it all with this line... 'this album is an attack- prepare your defenses'.

The last album to hit me this hard was maybe Shudder to Think 'Pony Express Record', My Bloody Valentine 'Loveless' or Faith No More 'Angel Dust' in the early '90's.

This is a very complex, provocatively arranged masterpiece. Once you warm up to the arrangements there are things to discover in this music that you never considered before.

It's hard to describe. Cutting, furious guitars... a cacophony of speed...

Everything about this album is deep. If you're looking for some truly modern, new music- something new that will knock you on your ass, this is it. Going into details about the songs, sound and whatnot isn't really important. If you're reading this, and you are interested in Solefald, then you need this more than you know- just get it at any price.
