Biography

Henry James once wrote: "It is art that makes life, makes interest, makes importance... and I know of no substitute whatever for the force and beauty of its process."

Julianna Barwick's art is equal parts force and beauty. Her music finds its motor in significant events in her own life, but they are abstracted into a sense of sonic wonderment, a radiance that you could say ... Read more in Amazon's Julianna Barwick Store

Editorial Reviews

Julianna Barwick's art is equal parts force and beauty. Her music finds its motor in significant events in her own life, but they are abstracted into a sense of sonic wonderment, a radiance that you could say is her signature sound. That radiance has been taken to new zeniths with Nepenthe, her third full-length album, which was recorded in Reykjavík, Iceland, in the dark cold days of February.

Effortless, beautiful and haunting.
Robert D. Miller
I must say, I was not thrilled with Ms. Barwick's previous CD, but I heard a bit of this one on the radio and it sounded lovely, so I took a chance.

I played it a lot during Christmas - what a relief!

Two days ago I had the opportunity to listen for the first time Julianna opening for Sigur Ros in Miami and I was immediately addicted to her music.
Her two CDs are simply fantastic! (as well as her performance).
What you will hear here is her beautiful voice looped and morphed into something extremely ethereal that sometimes doesn't even sound as a human voice and mixed with occasional piano.
If you like ambient music, beautiful female voices and soft melodies you have to try Julianna's music, you will not regret it. She will transport you to a place from where you won't want to leave.

I must say, I was not thrilled with Ms. Barwick's previous CD, but I heard a bit of this one on the radio and it sounded lovely, so I
took a chance. Also, I knew she had done all or part of it in Iceland, and so much magic comes out of there that I knew I had to check it out. And it is truly exquisite, and transporting. I think the incorporation of more external elements in addition to her voice
and piano really added tremendous depth and variety to the music. There is a children's choir, some strings, a bit of electronics (?), all very tastefully and elegantly employed.
All in all, a beautiful, meditative work, that never veers into "new age" mundanity. It's the companion CD to Jonsi and Alex's "Riceboy Sleeps"!!!
Highly recommended.

Such a delightfully haunting and supple album. Soothes the nerves and stirs the soul. I played it a lot during Christmas - what a relief!

First of all, I must say that Julianna Barwick was an acquired taste for me. I do enjoy ethereal and ambient music. Initially though, the broad brush that these genres apply to reached the limits (for me) with her songs. They are at most of the time, aural landscapes that Julie applies her angelic soaring vocals to... Much at times like Sigur Ros's Jonsi and his "Hopelandic" tongue. Basically there are no lyrics, just a meshing of voice with melody, capturing the essence of a dolphin gliding through the crystal blue waters of the Atlantic. Effortless, beautiful and haunting.

Nepenthe-- the title of her latest release--means "a drug described in Homer's Odyssey as banishing grief or trouble from a person's mind." On this album, the songs do provide a beauty of angelic proportions. The songs all meld into one long odyssey of magic. "The Harbinger" is a tale of foreboding of change, needed in order to move on in life. "One Half" starts out with Julianna's vocals "sampling" herself with one sentence spoken over and over again until it becomes a beautiful mantra of an unknown language....

Many songs, such as "Labyrinthe," sound like Sirens beckoning you to come ashore from a long journey, although not to come to an untimely end, but to partake in the magic of Julianna's songs....

Be forewarned, if you do not like art for art's sake and beautiful melodies for music's sake, you will not like this album. Also, if you need to listen to music that you need to sing a long to, you will not care for this album either... But I thoroughly enjoyed this release and I must say that Julianna uses her voice in a unique way--not as much paying attention to her but the pure essence of the melody.

While the music is gorgeous, the vinyl pressing is one of the worst I have come across. And that's after trying out two copies - so much non-fill noise at all the wrong places. Shame, as this deserves a really quiet and decent vinyl pressing.
