Not a very modern or interesting book, hot once in a while, but mostly dull.

Don't miss this book. For more than a decade, Marilyn Jaye Lewis has been crafting some of the best short stories in the English language, and later this year, we can expect the first collection of those polished jewels. Meanwhile, we have a new edition of Neptune & Surf, her late `90s trilogy of novellas which has introduced many readers in America and abroad to the delights of her work -- her musically attuned ear for dialogue, her clear eye for detail, and her outrageous sense of humor. Lewis is a major writer asscending. Check out marilynjayelewis.com for some samples of her work.

5.0 out of 5 stars Delicious writing... So sexy!, January 31, 2003

This review is from: Neptune and Surf (Blue Moon) (Mass Market Paperback)
Marilyn Jaye Lewis is one of my all-time favorite erotica writers. It is obvious she puts careful thought into each word she choses. Be aware-this book isn't smut-it's definitely erotic literature! Discerning minds will be very pleased with the purchase. I'm so thrilled to see a full book of only her work! In general, her stories are jewels in whatever collection they are found in.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book from a wonderful writer, February 4, 2003

Simply put, this is a wonderful, beautiful book. Marilyn Jaye Lewis is a superb writer and a brilliant storyteller. Yes, there's sex, erotica, but more importantly she knows how to use the language to evoke and mesmerize. Buy this book, you won't be disappointed!

5.0 out of 5 stars Well-paced stories to make you blush, February 3, 2003

This review is from: Neptune and Surf (Blue Moon) (Mass Market Paperback)
Marilyn Jaye Lewis' first book is a collection of three long erotic stories or novellas, and each is characterized by her typical mastery of pacing. Two of the stories feature a naive or faux-naive character whose initiation into a particular erotic practice involves a stimulating mixture of humiliation and excitement: "The Mercy Cure" shows a former convent student who gets to live out her attraction to two former nuns who were her teachers as an adolescent, and "Gianni's Girl" depicts the interrogation of a mobster's girlfriend by one of his associates "who didn't seem to think the forbidden acts were anything but love."

One of the strengths of Lewis' writing has always been the way her characters mix an easy acceptance of certain erotic acts with a sense of intense embarrassment that gives way to mounting arousal. Another strength we see in this book is the author's willingness to spend time developing characters and situations so that the reader understands that all that embarrassment and arousal are coming from complex, sometimes contradictory characters. Finally, there's almost always a deep sense of affection and devotion between the characters, no matter what they put each other through.

I think the most memorable piece in this book is the title story, set near the intersection of Surf and Neptune Avenues in Coney Island, where a former sailor romances a local prostitute. It's impossible in a short review to convey the depth of emotions and erotic obsession contained in this story, or even to explain what's so special about it. All I can say is that you'll remember these characters, the setting, and the emotions long after you put the book down.

I published some of Marilyn's first work in my magazine _Frighten the Horses_ in the early 1990s. It's wonderful to see her work getting the recognition it deserves.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hot? Yes!!!!!!, February 2, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Neptune and Surf (Blue Moon) (Mass Market Paperback)
Reading this book is a great time. I can't at all understand a review saying this is dull and dated. Perhaps the writer of that review didn't understand that these novellas are set in very specific places and times. The writing is so sharp and evocative, that one can become lost in the stories. Each of the three novellas is very different, so that there is something here for everyone. Although each is different, what all three have in common is deft use of detail, full characterization, and some very hot action! I recommend Neptune and Surf highly.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best written erotica I've ever read, January 31, 2003

This review is from: Neptune and Surf (Blue Moon) (Mass Market Paperback)
I feel so lucky to have found this book. These two novella's are by far two of the best written erotic pieces I have ever read. Not only are they hot and sexy, but they actually have great plot, great characters and superb writing. I wholeheartedly recommend this book. I tore through it in a day, and now I wish I had savored it!!
