5.0 out of 5 stars This book about Neptune and its unusual moons like the icy volcanic Triton will entrance the reader!, June 1, 2009
This review is from: Neptune (True Books: Space) (Paperback)
If you thought that Pluto was the farthest planet from the sun you would have been correct just a few short years ago, but since scientists have designated Pluto to the status of a dwarf planet in 2006 Neptune now has that honor. If you were to hop into a spaceship, it would take you a full ten years to get to the planet. If you were expecting a spectacular landing you would be in for a disappointment. The planet is "made mostly of liquid and gas" and is called a "gas giant." In addition to the blazing hot 10,000 degree core and 8,500 degree liquids of this planet, the temperature of the cloudy atmosphere can be as low as minus 353 degrees Fahrenheit. Talk about wide-range extreme temperatures!

This is a "True Book," one is which you will find two sentences in the front of the book. Only one sentence is true and you'll have to amble through the book to find the correct one, but that won't be a problem because "True Books" are fun books. A few other interesting facts you'll find out about Neptune are how it got its name, that it's a whopping 30,776 miles in diameter, it's the fourth largest planet in our solar system, how big it is in comparison to Earth, how it was discovered, that a day is 16 hours and 7 minutes long, the year is 165 Earth years and you'll learn about its 13 moons. Did you know that space probe Voyager 2 reached Neptune in 1989 and there's another probe on its way? Check back in 2035!

Come along and enjoy the ride in this book, one in which even the more reluctant reader will enjoy the fantastic photographs and pore over the two page spread of Neptune's solar system. The writing draws the reader right along and pages like "Triton's ice volcanoes" will spur the imagination. In addition to the photographs there are informative facts scattered throughout the book, enhanced illustrations, a page on statistics, important words, an index and recommended book and web site resources. What did astronomers once call Neptune? If you don't know, you'd better read this book!
