This is a handcrafted display of seashells found around the world. Paintings and hand-lettered text invite the reader into a world of shells, with each section opening with a letter from A-Z designed from tiny shells that follow descriptions of shells with the popular as well as the Latin names included. Science, folklore, history, myth, cooking, craft and travel all inform the individual portraits. For example, the murex shell's entry tells the history of the royal purple dye extracted from them by Mediterranean sailors in ancient times. There are recipes for delicacies such as mussel and almond soup and conch salad and instructions for crafts such as making wind chimes and stencilling a frieze of shells.

a "coffee table" book for shell lovers...,

this book comes up in Amazon's search engine as a shell craft book. That is misleading, and if you buy it for that reason you will be dissappointed. The author does include a few blurbs about shell crafts and recipes. BUT, the vast majority of the book is a mid size, watercolor art book of various shells the author admires. The art work is lovely, and would be appreciated by a shell collector-but as pretty as the book is-content wise it's not more than just "eye candy".
So, if you're looking for shell crafts, education, or a shell guide-I'd say skip it. If you are looking for a lovely gift for the shell collection in your life then pick it up. 3.5 stars.
