The books story line is great, girl inherits mega bucks and doesn't care; she wants to make it on her own abilities, she meets stud muffin in nerds clothing and sparks fly while he saves her from her evil uncle and his S&M girlfriend. The problem with the book is that it is shallow and fails to achieve the much sought after sexual tension between the two main characters. Almost continuous reference to sex barely covers the fact that there is very little story being told. Dialog between characters is forced and unnatural.

I did not care for the style of the authors writing and suggest that if you are going to read this book that you check it out from a library or buy it at a re-use shop so you do not waste your money as I did.

4.0 out of 5 stars amusing North to Alaska nerdy tale, February 1, 2005
This review is from: Nerd Gone Wild (Paperback)
Following the death of her beloved grandmother who raised her, Ally Jarrett decides to live her dream. She leaves the relative warmth of Southern California to become a wildlife photographer in wintry Porcupine, Alaska. Not long afterward, her grandmother's nerdy personal assistant Mitchell Carruthers arrives with the pretext he needs her to sign estate documents.

Mitch is actually a private investigator bodyguard hired by Ally's grandmother to keep her safe from her Uncle Kurt. Because she knew Ally would reject a bodyguard, grandma got Mitch to pretend to be a nerd and obtained a deathbed pledge from him that he would keep her beloved safe. As Mitch and Ally fall in love, Kurt arrives with dominatrix girlfriend Vivian pretending to be a famous wildlife photographer for they have plans for the wealth that his stepmother left totally to his niece.

The nerd series has not gone much wilder than this tale that seems to take two Los Angeles citizens and voluntarily places them amongst a rowdy crowd that must have escaped from Northern exposure. The story line is fun to follow as Mitch tries to ignore his desire and love for Ally who thinks he is pathetic until the first kiss. Vivian is an intriguing character though some readers will be turned off by the S&M bondage relationship between her and Kurt. Vicki Lewis Thompson takes nerds where they never gone before with this amusing North to Alaska tale.

3.0 out of 5 stars not enough nerd content for this nerd..., April 13, 2005
This review is from: Nerd Gone Wild (Paperback)
This was given to me for my birthday as a gag gift, but I had to read it anyway, which I did on an international plane flight. I was expecting more "nerd" given the title, but the title character, Mitchell J. Carruthers, Jr. was really a former nerd turned bodyguard, disguised as a nerd. His nerdhood was demonstrated in the book only through references to his skills at financial management and his ability to look up information on the Internet.

I don't believe I've ever read another romance novel, but this seems like a rather stereotypical one, from what I've heard. The ultimate outcome (woman gets nerd) seems a foregone conclusion from the second or third chapter, but there's a lot of tease from there to the actual hookup.

The narrative focus alternates between Mitchell and Ally Jarrett (the female protagonist, an heiress who wants to make it as a wildlife photographer without relying on her millions), and the very simple plot involves an Uncle who wants to obtain some or all of the inheritance for himself. There are some minor characters who are townspeople in Porcupine, Alaska, where all of the action takes place (apart from a brief scene in Anchorage) to introduce some minor subplots, conflicts, and comedy. By my reading, the only one who "goes wild" is Ally in chapters 2-3, though perhaps the inevitable hookup of the two main characters also is meant to count.

This was a mildly enjoyable read, but those expecting more nerd content will be disappointed.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not Bad in my opinion, February 23, 2005
This review is from: Nerd Gone Wild (Paperback)
I thought the book was pretty good. I've never read anything by this author and was in the mood for a book and just grabbed it. Not having done my research for this one I was impressed. I think the story line was good and the main characters were believable. The supporting characters and the location were not too realistic with the talk of sex being such a hot and common topic. But I did like the book. I laughed out loud several times and the tension between the two characters was pretty good.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not as good as her previous efforts, March 16, 2005
By
This review is from: Nerd Gone Wild (Paperback)
With every author, one must give allowances for being somewhat off one's game from time to time. I'd have to say Nerd Gone Wild is one of the times Thompson was off her game.

This is not to say that the book wasn't enjoyable, but there was just no 'sparkle' like her previous books did. It might just be me, but the two protagonists didn't seem to fit like other romance novel pairs do. It's like on one page Allie was like "I would never sleep with Mitch," and then the next she said, "Hey Mitch. Go buy some condoms." It's kinda an intangible quality that just isn't there.

Besides that, most of the book is spent demonstrating the innate weirdness of all the denizens of Porcupine, and the sexual kinks of Allie's uncle and his girlfriend. Of course, the characters ARE pretty goofy, but it gets old after a while. All the action seems to take place in the last twenty, thirty pages of the book, and let's face it, it's rather anticlimatic when it does come. (Not like we saw it coming the whole time, or anything.)

For the record, I liked her first two books WAY more than this. Read it if you want, but you may want to get it from a used bookstore or a library first to see if you want to buy it. I can't recommend it wholeheartedly.

4.0 out of 5 stars Gone Wild and Long Winded, February 9, 2008
Thompson has written another delightful book. The story is full of intrigue, twists and turns. There are ample "multis" mentioned and how
they come about. The plot is rather interesting and so are the love episodes. I found this book to be a bit long. Also at the end, she
condenses things very much and the concluding paragraphs are too weak.
Ally is either dead or somewhere else other than reality. Her proposal
to Mitchell is surprising but the setting seems so staged. And why does she take so long? Why is Mitch planning on returning to L.A. without giving his Love a chance? As a private investigator, he seems unaware of his own feelings toward Ally or the possible outcomes that can result from
their orgasitic relationship? Why is he so professional when there is more than sex realized? And why is the action dragged out so long.
I enjoyed the book. Would I try reading it again? NO. This is not the case with some of her other books. The "constant entertainment" starts getting a bit thin. Yet Thompson is an excellent writer and uses
great descriptors.

3.0 out of 5 stars Depleted Nerd?, March 28, 2005
This review is from: Nerd Gone Wild (Paperback)
I absolutely LOVED the first two 'Nerd' books, so there wasn't any doubt that I wouldn't buy this one! The characters ALWAYS have great chemistry between each other and alot of wit. But, it seems as though the series may be dwindling down. It is getting really monotonous. Once I read a few pages, I guessed the story-line was the same as the others... nerd likes girl, girl dislikes nerd. Something happens to girl, nerd saves day and they live happily ever after.

I can only hope that a different outline begins to form for this series or I will be getting these books from the library or not read them at all.

I loved the first two Nerd books - A bit of light romance mixed with a bit of sex and all's well that ends well. This book crosses the line from a light romance to way too much S&M sex for me. I am only going to finish it because I paid for it. I like my romance and sex a bit less "wild".

`Nerd Gone Wild' by Vicki Lewis Thompson is a mix of sweet romances and Villains who like S&M. Ally Jarret goes to Alaska to enjoy some new found freedom but her grandmother hires a bodyguard to protect her from corrupt money stealing people. The mix of small town Alaska who talk about sex all the time and the interesting storylines this was a fun erotic novel. This was nice quick read - enjoy! I would also suggest Body Check by Deirdre Martin , `Drive me Crazy' by Kate Angell , The Ice House by Minette Walters and `Saving Allegheny Green' by Lori Wilde.

5.0 out of 5 stars Zowie!! This was fun and HOT!, March 23, 2005
This review is from: Nerd Gone Wild (Paperback)
This was my first read with V. Lewis Thompson. I'm immediately running out and getting her other two "Nerd" books! This was a fun and hot read. The setting is very reminiscent of one of my old favorite shows, "Northern Exposure" with similar quirky characters. Also, there is a hot sexual undercurrent throughout, including most of the townspeople! I bought the book because the description (stud disguised as nerd to carry out a "mission") reminded me of "The Scarlet Pimpernel" which I love. The chemistry between Mitchell and Ally was just fantastic, and I just couldn't put the book down.

I'm definitely going to grab a handful of Vicki Lewis Thompson's books for more (hopefully) great reads!
