A funny romantic comedy with an excellent cast of characters, January 26, 2007
This review is from: My Nerdy Valentine (Mass Market Paperback)
Amanda Rykowsky is coming back to the office after running an errand for her boss, when she runs into the man who will complicate her well-ordered life. The problem, besides the fact that she'd committed herself to not dating so that she can focus on school and work, is that the errand entailed running to the local porn store for her boss and picking up all various sex toys and other paraphernalia. It's just her luck that it happens to be a rainy day and the paper bag she requested to conceal its contents, succumbs to the weather and deposits all of her materials on the ground in front of her building. It's also just her luck that the slightly-nerdy, very sexy stockbroker who works in her building happens to see it all happen... Proving that chivalry is not dead, William Sloan valiantly helps Amanda collect her sex toys and take them back to the office. Though he's interested in her and asks her out, Amanda lets him know that her life is too complicated for dating right now. Besides working as an intern and being a full-time student, she also moonlights as a bartender six nights a week for extra cash. With her goal of graduating at the top of her class and attending Harvard for graduate school, there's simply no time for men in her life. Well, that and the fact that her oversexed boss catches a glimpse of Will and decides she wants him for herself. When Amanda begins receiving mysterious valentines in the office, she assumes that Will just can't take a hint. However, as the notes become more disturbing she realizes that Will wouldn't send her something so offensive. Rushing in to save the day, Will decides to pretend to be her boyfriend just so that they can scare her creepy admirer away. He knows Amanda wants nothing to do with him, and is respectful of her wishes... only the more time the two spend together, the more he finds himself falling for her. And the more time Amanda spends in Will's presence, the less she thinks about studying sex therapy and the more she thinks about engaging in some one-on-one sex therapy with Will... The hits just keep on coming in Vicki Lewis Thompson's highly successful Nerds Series, and My Nerdy Valentine is no exception. Thompson makes it pretty clear that you can be an intelligent man who wears glasses while still being sexually attractive specimen who women will swoon for. With the character of Will, she has given readers the best of both worlds: a man with a talent for numbers and information gathering who is also willing to support his woman and her endeavors and who once again proves that chivalry is not dead. Of the same token, Amanda is a good example for women that it's okay to be goal-oriented and know what you want from life just so long as you don't start to sacrifice your future happiness to accomplish them. Combined with supporting characters like Justin, Will's brokenhearted best friend who tries to use drinking and sex to forget his problems, Mavis and Chester, Amanda's nosy geriatric neighbors who have no problems butting their noses in her life, and Gloria, the oversexed sex therapist (if there is such a thing) who acts as the catalyst that allows Will and Amanda to meet, My Funny Valentine is a well-packaged, thought out, funny romantic comedy. I'd highly recommend it for anyone who enjoys cute, smart chick lit.

Great Characters and light read !!!!, February 9, 2007
This review is from: My Nerdy Valentine (Mass Market Paperback)
My Nerdy Valentine is very unique book. The main character Amanda works as intern at non-traditional sex therapist office. She starts receiving valentines and thinks it might be Will a man who works in the office building and guy who she dropped all the sex toys in front of the first day they met. It's not Will who is sending the creepy Valentines but a crazy man who wants to kidnap her. Will decides to protect Amanda, which leads to romance. Through out the whole book I wanted to yell - call the cops a crazy man is after you - Will the stockbroker cannot protect you. Over all the book had humor, great romance and twist of mayhem.

Fun, quirky read, June 15, 2007
This review is from: My Nerdy Valentine (Mass Market Paperback)
Pretty good book. It could have been better with some changes, but in my opinion, it was more enjoyable than the most recent Nerd books from Thompson. There were parts of this book that I really enjoyed, but then there were parts that I didn't. For the first half or maybe 2/3rds, I was really into the book and considered it possibly one of the best Nerd books, 2nd only to my favorite, Nerd Gone Wild. But when I got to about half way through, I started to get a little annoyed and bored. That can mainly be attributed to the fact that over and over you seem to hear about Amanda and her priorities. At times, that just dominated the story and it got boring. There wasn't enough other stuff going on to give the story some variety. Even when there was, the overlying theme was still about Amanda's goals. She just started to get really irritating and came off a bit self-centered. The story would have been helped by some more variety and making Amanda just a smidge softer. Aside from that, there were great aspects to the story. Thompson has a wonderful sense of humor and I laughed out loud a number of times. The sexuality of the story is wonderfully portrayed and the sex scenes were hot, as usual. Thompson isn't shy about the many aspects of sex that a lot of writers turn a blind eye too. It's refreshing. The whole thing with the sex therapist (while not quite believable) was hilarious. The supporting cast was fabulous. The plot resolution was good. The overall romance was pretty good, though I've read better. Bottomline with My Nerdy Valentine is that it's a fun, sexy, quirky book that's good for semi-light reading. If you're not a fan of vibrant sexuality, you'll probably be bothered by the book. It's also not high on emotion or plot. I'd compare it to something written by Rachel Gibson or Deirdre Martin, but better written. I think it was better than the last couple of Nerd books, but not as good as the earliest ones. Rating: 3.5 / 5
