Product Description

What’s a band to do with no fame, and especially no sold-out arena to perform in? How can they grab the cash they need to build the Concert Dome of their DREAMS?! Well, they can’t. But the NERIMA DAIKON BROTHERS sure as hell are going to try! WATCH as Hideki, Ichiro, and Mako (yeah, one of them’s a chick!) farm daikon by day, and battle slimy record producers, pachinko-mad hags, monstrous nurses, flatulent hospital administrators, and hot police babes, by night. LISTEN as the band AND the evil villains sing hilarious songs, all along the bumpy, daikon-studded road! TUNE IN AND SEE!!! (What’s daikon? Is it a vegetable? Is it a fruit? A weapon? A girl’s best friend? All of the above?! )

The title of the broadcast series Nerima Daikon Brothers (2006) comes from the name of a Tokyo suburb once known for its daikon radishes. Hideki dreams of turning his radish patch into a rock & roll stadium where he can perform--and of making love to his money-hungry cousin Mako. His phlegmatic brother Ichiro works in a host bar entertaining rich old ladies and at least one dirty old man. Nerima Daikon Brothers combines the shrill hysteria of Excel Saga with the musical format of The Archies. Accompanied by Pandaikon, a panda they catch raiding their field, the trio keeps breaking into song. But the vocal cast lacks the chops needed to put over the banal musical numbers. With its leering double entendres about radishes, hot dogs, and cucumbers, Nerima Daikon Brotherswill appeal to hormonal teenagers who enjoy telling dirty jokes in the locker room.(Rated TV MA SL, suitable for ages 17 and older: sexual humor, brief nudity, cartoon violence, profanity, alcohol use, ethnic and sexual stereotypes) --Charles Solomon

Love it or hate it, I love musicals. From "Will Rogers Follies" to "Grease" and even that "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" episode, I dig musicals.

So, when I found out that ADV's "Nerima Daikon Brothers" is an anime musical, I was curious and even stoked!

After watching all episodes, all I can say is... WOW!

Not only is this anime unique, it's not afraid to take a poke at Japanese pop culture (and the entertainment industry) and also include some mature themes that I found hilarious.

So, what is "Nerima Daikon Brothers"? The story revolves around three people: Hideki (the farmer of Daikons), Ichiro (the charismatic man who entertains women at Japanese host bars) and the sexy Mako (yes, a woman and cousin of Hideki).

Three individuals who want to make money as the music trio known as "Nerima Daikon Brothers".

The first episode for those not familiar with Japanese entertainment takes a poke at Johnny's Jimusho (the popular boy band agency known for bands like SMAP, V6, TOKIO, ARASHI, etc.)

With subtle hints with watercolored images of Kimura Takuya and other Johnny's guys on the walls, the person in charge of the agency is recruiting for a music group.

The person in charge of this agency happens to be a cross-dressing pervert who can't seem to stop stroking Ichiro (yes, you read that right) and gives Nerima Daikon Brothers a try.

After the agency takes the money from those who have auditioned and leaving them broke, the Nerima Daikon Brothers fight back.

What happens before your eyes is just a shock that I can't even describe in words. You have to watch it to find out.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hilarious and Original January 21, 2007
Nerima Daikon Brothers is a one of a kind anime. Each episode is full of singing, dancing, laughs and not to mention a sexual inuendo or 2. The series follows the members of a band know as the Nerima Daikon Brothers. The first episode opens with the leader of the group, Hideki daydreamin about his dream in life, to build a rock n' roll dome in his daikon field.(What's a daikon u ask, watch and find out) What follows is a musical romp through Nerima as Hideki, Ichiro and Mako(the female of the group) attempt to raise funds for their dome, while battling evil producers, nurses, pachinko hall owners and whoever else attempts to steal from the good people of Nerima. With support of the rental guy(those of you who have watched Excel Saga should recognize him) they take down bad guys and take their money. Will they ever get the money for their dome, tune in a find out.

DVD features include, Sing-along with the Daikon Brothers, music video of Ma-Ji-Ya-Ba starring the japanese voice actors, AD Vidnotes, and a couple of comentaries.

4.0 out of 5 stars Smile and say CASH!!! January 3, 2007

Nerima Daikon Brothers is one of the most original anime I have ever seen. From the director of Excel Saga, Shinichi Watanabe (more popuarly known as Nabeshin), we are given another series similar to Excel Saga at least in pacing and the complete random hilarity. I was a bit skeptical about an anime musical but it actually works really well and is honestly a lot of fun to watch. I would venture to say this series belongs in everyones anime collection. If you're a fan of Excel Saga or itchin for something different from all the mecha, ninja, magical girl and high school drama's anime churns out then I'd say you definitely need to check this out.
