4.0 out of 5 stars It's better now!
I just bought and installed Nero9 without any problems (Other than slowest install know to mankind). I think Ahead must have reacted to some of the bad reviews and pushed some quick changes in.
I was a little worried after reading all the bad reviews because I had already (just) bought it. I had just gotten burned with Pinnacles Studio 10 and still healing up (This...

Nero should get a grip. Version 9 is even more bloated than their previous releases, except for:

- They added some TV viewing application. Why does it belong to a DVD OR CD BURNING application ? I repeat... DVD or CD burning application. Yes, that's what it is still supposed to be.

- Removed some usefull apps, like the back-up module...

1.0 out of 5 stars Nero 9 = disaster, October 23, 2008
This review is from: Nero 9 [OLD VERSION] (DVD-ROM)
Nero should get a grip. Version 9 is even more bloated than their previous releases, except for:

- They added some TV viewing application. Why does it belong to a DVD OR CD BURNING application ? I repeat... DVD or CD burning application. Yes, that's what it is still supposed to be.

- Removed some usefull apps, like the back-up module.

- It doesn't install at all. Well, if it does you are very very lucky. Plus you have a lot of patience, because it takes almost an hour to install. Hell, even Vista installs faster these days.

- During installation likely you get lots of Windows installer warnings.

- It hijacks your file types.

- Is a pain to uninstall. Again one hour the same messages and errors as an install.

- It corrupts your Windows Restore Points. So it could be that you can't go back to a restore point. Then all that helps is the Nero cleanup application.

Nero should do a few things:

- Fix this piece of software. Go back to the drawing board and fix it.
- Rethink what this software is. They are freeware programs like DVD Flick, Imgburn or CDBurnerXP, which can do the same basic stuff just as good and don't require 1.5 GB on your hard disk. Plus they actually work !

1.0 out of 5 stars Garbage, November 8, 2008
This review is from: Nero 9 [OLD VERSION] (DVD-ROM)
Slow install? How about this...I started install at 10 p.m. got up at 5 a.m. and it was STILL installing. The EPG (program guide} for the Live T.V. has not worked and after contacting tech support they said do the reinstall. The first install took about an hour. The reinstall took 8 HOURS!!!
I have purchased Nero 7, Nero 8 and now Nero 9.
This is it. No more. This software should have never been released. It was rushed to market. It's like selling a wad of dough and calling it bread. I have purchased buggy software before but this stands alone.
Contacting tech support is a 5 day process. I've contacted them twice and that is the response time. The answers and advice they offer is do a reinstall. This is after sending them screen shots they requested and an in depth system anaysis tool that gives them a ton of info about your system. Reinstall. Wow...you really looked into didn't you?
I gave up and decided to go back to Nero 8 and guess what? It says my legally purchased version has an illegal license. What?
It will let me install 8 but I can't run it. This is after confirming my license with Nero.
I contacted support about this too. I'll let you know how this works out in 4 or 5 days.
So far, I have wasted hours and hours with this software that does not rise to even the beta stage. Save your money and your time. Go elsewhere.

1.0 out of 5 stars Waste of time and money - shockingly bad software, November 12, 2008
This review is from: Nero 9 [OLD VERSION] (DVD-ROM)
Pros: Nothing

Cons: Bloated software. It takes hours to attempt an installation which then fails. Even using the uninstall tool provided by Nero, it's almost impossible to uninstall without hacking the registry. Installs Ask Toolbar spyware even if you select do not install.

Summary: Don't buy this software. As other reviewers have said, it takes hours to install, if you can get it to install at all.

I have a high specification laptop running Windows Vista 32-bit Business and I'm an IT consultant with 34 years of experience. It took me several days of registry hacking to 'successfully' install this update.

1.0 out of 5 stars Nero 9 a big dissapointment!, October 28, 2008
This review is from: Nero 9 [OLD VERSION] (DVD-ROM)
Unfortunately there is nothing positive I have to say about Nero 9

- The installation process takes 20+ minutes, and randomly fails at around 80%. I had to run the installer 5 times in order to install this software successfully.
- They removed more features than they added, gone are MediaHome and BackitUp, replaced with a useless live TV feature.
- You can no longer choose what file types to assign to Nero, the software makes a hostile takeover of all your video and audio file types.

The software package is expensive considering they added nothing new useful, Nero 9 is exactly like Nero 8 with a new splashscreen. Except now you have to pay extra for MediaHome and BackitUp, and you have to experience plenty of application errors.

1.0 out of 5 stars avoid like the plague, October 22, 2008
This review is from: Nero 9 [OLD VERSION] (DVD-ROM)
this product is a disaster - there have been many problems just installing it, many people can't, and when it does install some functions don't work properly. the manufacturer's support is useless. they keep releasing updates which don't solve the problems. check out the nero user forums.

1.0 out of 5 stars Does not play Blu-ray, November 17, 2008
This review is from: Nero 9 [OLD VERSION] (DVD-ROM)
Usually when you spend $50 on an UPGRADE, you get an upgrade. This is not the case here. Nero has removed the ability to play blurays without warning potential customers of this. So you spend $$, go through the painful process of installing this thing, then try do something you did with version 8 and it doesn't work (as it is no longer supported). WTF?!? Then try to uninstall this thing and reinstall 8, I couldn't do it (8 kept saying the installation was corrupt). I had to use a backup image from 2 months ago to restore my computer to the state it was in pre-nero 9, and in the process lose a bunch of stuff. We'll see if nero gives me a refund for this junk.

If ahead software was concerned in the least about it's customers, it would have been upfront in stating what was and was not included with version 9. Instead they lied (you can lie when you do not say something about something you should, it's called lying by omission) their product and wasted several hours of my life & that's unforgivable, especially in this economic climate.

I'll need a REALLY good reason before Ahead Software will see another dime from me.

In summery, if you buy Nero 9 you'll get absolute junk software + lying software company + really bad customer service.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not Bluray Compatable!!, November 5, 2008

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Nero 9 [OLD VERSION] (DVD-ROM)
Despite the fact they claim it's bluray compatible, it is not. Granted, you can purchase the bluray plug-in for an extra $9.99 off the website to rip non-copy-protected bluray. But, even with the plug-in, it won't do a simple function: play a bluray movie!

Nero Showtime, the all powerful media player that hijacks your media file types, is NOT bluray compatible. WHAT??????

I have Nero 8. I love Nero 8. And despite all the negative ratings here, I purchased Nero 9. See, Cyberlink decided that instead of updating their bluray player to the most current bluray specs, they would release a new version and make everyone that purchased it before, spend another $100.00 for the new version. I thought, why do that if I can get Nero 9 for $70.00. It claimed to be bluray compatible, why wouldn't Showtime be bluray compatible as well?

Fortunately, the tech support at Nero and the customer support and Amazon have been gracious about letting me return it. But Nero really needs to get a grip and make some serious improvements on this program.

1.0 out of 5 stars Absolute Junk, December 31, 2008
This review is from: Nero 9 [OLD VERSION] (DVD-ROM)
This opinion relates to multiple versions [9.0.9.4 and 9.2.6.0] of Nero 9 trailware directly from nero's website.

I do not believe the trialware is different than the full paid version so here goes...

1) It takes literally forever to install. Maybe related but the install process will create multiple restore points for each of its applications. Why? Isn't one restore point sufficient?

2) Once installed 9.0.9.4 had screwed the registry so bad that when any CD or DVD disk was inserted the context menu had a new listing... ERROR: UNKNOWN RESOURCE ID. Installation of 9.2.6.0 only made things worse as Nero 9 would no longer run on my system. I tries to re-install 9.0.9.4 but it too would no longer run.

Note: It is absolutely amazing how many registry entries were added. I would strongly recommend you backup your registry before attempting a Nero 9 install - you've been warned.

I emailed tech support and they just told me to ensure a clean install with the clean tool.

3) So, using the Nero General Clean Tool to clean up garbage their uninstaller was unable to clean, resulted in Visual C++ runtime errors. Odd, none of my other apps that use Visual C++ have runtime errors.

Do your own research and see that this software is horrible. For those that do get it to work most likely did the standard install and not custom install.

SAVE YOUR MONEY!

I purchased this item. I really liked Nero 8, despite many bad reviews at the time. So I didn't believe the naysayers about Nero 9. My loss. Wasted money and hours of cleanup on my system to totally remove the problems it left. First of all, it wouldn't even fully install. Then, it left problems in my registry and with other audio/video programs. Finally, after using their own cleanup program they had to design for this mess (doesn't it tell you something when a software company has to design software to fix their OWN program and give it to [ex-] customers to repair their computers?) and after several registry cleanings, I removed it and will NEVER purchase a Nero product again. DO NOT... DO NOT BUY!!!

Stay away from this software until Nero learn to treat their customers with courtesy and respect. Nero Vision hijacks many, many file associations and creates absolute havoc. They may think it's clever, but it's a real pain that can only be fixed by uninstalling. Look at the forums on this. Like many others, I have uninstalled Nero and will go to a supplier with integrity and manners.
