Book Description

May 2004
The White House Situation Room is arguably the most important facility in the most important building in the world. As the president’s intelligence and alert center, it provides vital communication and crisis management capabilities to the chief executive and his advisers. It can also be “an island of calm,” as a top adviser for Vice President Al Gore once described it. So little is known about the Situation Room that, until the publication of Nerve Center, the American public’s knowledge of it is almost entirely based on its portrayal by the entertainment industry.

Yet, as Michael K. Bohn points out, Hollywood has failed to capture the real drama of the Situation Room. Numerous crises come alive in Nerve Center, from the Vietnam War (when President Johnson made late night visits to the Situation Room wearing his pajamas and went so often that he moved his Oval Office chair there), to the attempted assassination of President Ronald Reagan, to today’s high-tech war on terrorism. Created in the aftermath of the Bay of Pigs fiasco by advisers to President John Kennedy, presidents, cabinet members, and National Security Council staff members have all come to depend on the Situation Room. “I knew that I could always rely on the Situation Room,” President Jimmy Carter recalled, “and it never let me down.”

Bohn, who served as director of the Situation Room for the first President George Bush, has recruited numerous officials, including former and current staff, to tell the colorful forty-year history of the Situation Room. In a final chapter, Bohn uses a fictional crisis to describe how the Situation Room will evolve to help the president meet the challenges of an increasingly dangerous future.

More About the Author

Michael Bohn has been writing for publication since 1996, but led a varied life before that. A career naval intelligence officer from 1969 to 1988, Bohn served aboard ships and intelligence centers, including a tour in South Vietnam. He was a military social aide to President Nixon and ran the White House Situation Room for President Reagan. He sent a twice-daily summary of world events to Reagan and senior White House staff members and provided crisis management support during dozens of international dust-ups during Reagan's second term. He was swept up in the Iran-Contra scandal while working for Reagan and became a victim of political posturing of the highest order.

Mr. Bohn managed defense contracts for Booz*Allen, 1988-92, and owned a residential remodeling company 1992-2001.

Michael was a primary contributor and on-screen personality for a 1999 Discovery Channel documentary on submarine warfare during the Cold War. He acted as a program consultant for, and appeared in, two BBC Television documentaries about crisis management in the White House, one in November 2002 and the other in April 2003. Also, Mr. Bohn appeared in a July 2003 special, "The White House at War," a joint ABC News, New York Times, and Discovery Channel project; and in a 2004 German public TV special, "Palaces of Power."

In seeking to establish a writing career, Bohn turned to his friend Gene Gibbons, then the Reuters White House correspondent. "Write for the local paper," Gibbons said, "they'll print anything." In 1996, he sold his first article to the Mount Vernon Gazette, which circulates in the Virginia suburbs outside Washington DC. Since then he has written features and reported on golf for the Gazette and 18 other papers in the Connection Newspaper group in Virginia.

His first book was Nerve Center, Inside the White House Situation Room (2003). The second soon followed--The Achille Lauro Hijacking (2004), and his third, Money Golf (2007), a history of the gentlemanly wager on the golf course, was named by Golf Digest as one of the most intriguing golf books of 2007.

Bohn's latest book, Heroes & Ballyhoo: How the Golden Age of the 1920s Transformed American Sports, will be published in late October by Potomac Books.

5.0 out of 5 stars Behind Closed Doors - A Fascinating Look, April 15, 2003
By A Customer
Mike Bohn has succeeded in opening to the reader a portion of the White House that few understand - let alone acknowledge its existence or function. The Situation Room truly is the "Nerve Center" for the country - both in times of crisis and in peace time. It is a central briefing room for the President, and a contact center for countries around the globe. Before reading this wonderful book, I hadn't thought about how calls to heads-of-state were made on behalf of the President, but now I can see why they would all go through the Situation Room.

If you are a fan of political movies, and want to know the truth behind the Hollywood fiction, or are just a political junkie, then this truly is the one book you want on your shelf!

I love, love, love this book.So much detailed history into the most powerful room on the planet! The info is slightly outdated since the Bush administration has updated the room. However, this book is a great read for any White House history buff!
