5.0 out of 5 stars Dr. Weekes saved my life, November 13, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Peace from Nervous Suffering (Signet) (Paperback)
The book "Peace from Nervous Suffering" literally saved my life. I found this book in the late 1960s, after suffering from agoraphobia and panic disorder since my early teens. No one knew what it was in the late 1950s, when I was a teen. I married at 19, then continued to suffer, so I went to a psychiatrist for 2 years. He was a traditional Freudian psychiatrist who gamely nodded his head and said, "And then what happened"? After 2 years, and prescriptions that I rarely took (I was afraid of the side effects), I finally quit the psychiatrist. Shortly thereafter, I found this book and read it. It was like a bright light shined through my mind, when it was all explained to me in plain language. I couldn't put the book down and felt so relieved that I wasn't the only one with this problem. And that I wasn't crazy. Long story, short. I applied her solutions (and she does give the tools to deal and heal), and in my mid 30's I finally licked this problem. I am now 56. Whatever you do, before you hop on the drug bandwagon, read this book first.

5.0 out of 5 stars A common-sense approach to common problems., January 28, 2000
By
Janice Adelson (New York, New York USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Peace from Nervous Suffering (Signet) (Paperback)
Dr. Weekes, who thinks and writes very much in the same vein as Dr. Abraham Low, founder of the self-help method know as "Recovery" in the '30s, is a woman and doctor of extraordinary insight into the psychic pain of anxiety and panic. Her book is a wonderfully "easy" read; chapters flow from problem to suggestion simply, warmly, and with much encouragement. As a physician writing to a broad audience, she has the knack of making the reader feel spoken to on a very personal level. Dr. Weekes does not write "down" to her readers, but she is mercifully (and purposely, I suspect) lacking the overly analytical approach and accompanying "jargon" so prevalent in the marketplace today. This is a book to keep handy and to read calmly for the pleasure of Weekes' wisdom. Although her book is so helpful in times of stress, there's no need to wait for the dreaded adrenaline surge. Dr. Weekes is a fine writer who deserves to be read for that reason alone.

5.0 out of 5 stars If you're serious about helping yourself, BUY THIS BOOK!, September 18, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Peace from Nervous Suffering (Signet) (Paperback)
This is the only book of the "type" you'll ever need. Throw away the others. Whatever it is that's causing you anxiety (agoraphobia included) , there's help for you here - a step-by-step guide to complete recovery. The emphasis is on self-help and self-reliance. You learn to go THROUGH your fears. Accept them, and get on with your life, no matter what. Once you ACCEPT something, you stop being so afraid of it. Gradually, you'll stop being afraid of being afraid. And you'll recover. No pills, no props, no gimmicks, no self-pity. "Face, Accept, Float, Let time pass" - these are the 4 cornerstones of the book. I know they work - because I've applied these principles to my own life, and the improvement is incredible. So, buy the book! It's small in size, and easy to read. Dr Weekes writes in a very understanding manner, and with a truly extraordinary warmth and sincerity . This book is for anyone and everyone - it'll help you cope with even everyday stress. This doctor deserves a gold medal. Keep smiling, and keep fighting. With best wishes to all.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book just works..., May 22, 2003

I ordered this book on a whim. I've ordered several different books about anxiety and agoraphobia and they didn't seem to make sense to me. As a person who is sometimes housebound and prone to severe anxiety I thought I would give this book a try, plus it is only 7 dollars. I can say I would have paid 700 dollars for this book. The advice is SIMPLE and easy to understand. It is an older book so it doesn't focus on buzzwords or the latest new medication. What it does do is explain how you can help yourself. Much better than any of the other books out there now and cost's a whole lot less.

Be aware though that this book is older and as such doesn't use much of the same jargon doctors today use. For example it refers to Nervous Illness, or giddiness instead of buzzwords or anachronims like GAD, SAD, or depersonalization. Other than that it is a sound choice for someone suffering from an anxiety related illness.

5.0 out of 5 stars More Help and hope for your nerves, July 5, 2000

Lori Mangrum (Bloomington, Indiana United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Peace from Nervous Suffering (Signet) (Paperback)
Claire Weekes has special insight into the minds of those struggling with panic and anxiety disorders. When you are very anxious and afraid of your symptoms, it feels impossible at times to "walk through" these feelings on your own. I have struggled at various times in my life with panic attacks, and as another reader mentioned, I keep a copy of her book near to read again when I am struggling. It helps me to remember that this is something that I can come through. With her help, I have walked through panic and anxiety to the other side. It is especially important for those beginning with this struggle to read her books. You will see that you are not alone. You will see that you can come through this and live a normal life again. Thanks to Dr. Weekes for her writings.

Years ago when there was no such label as 'panic attacks' I suffered a fright so shocking I thought I was going to die.I didn't know what was happening to me. I didn't know where to go for help.By sheer luck I picked up the book, "Peace From Nervous Suffering". Dr.Weekes explained quite logically what my body was going through and gave me the tools to help me. It really worked! I was cured and continue to feel fine 22 years later.I always keep some copies at home and give them out to anyone I know who suffers from anxiety attacks.

4.0 out of 5 stars VERY HELPFUL, June 26, 2005
By
This review is from: Peace from Nervous Suffering (Signet) (Paperback)
This little book helped me when I was suffering a bout of stress related problems. The physical symptoms were alarming and heightened the way I was feeling. The writer explined these symptoms, and the links with the anxious mind, in a very clear and compassionate way.

The book really did bring a lot of comfort, understanding, and it helped me through my problems. This occurred over three months ago, and I feel that I have learned a great deal from the situation: that I was overdoing it at work, that there is a price to pay in terms of the degredation of mental health; this leads to an array of unusual physical symptoms (in my case: pins and needles in arms and legs, inability to catch my breath, noise and traffic in my head and insomnia).

This book explained these and encouraged me not to be too alarmed , explaining that they will eventually pass - and they did.

It's an excellent book which will help you understand what is happening to your nerves. It persuades you to avoid these situations in the future.

5.0 out of 5 stars The BEST anxiety book - hands down., April 12, 2004
This review is from: Peace from Nervous Suffering (Signet) (Paperback)
I suffer from anxiety disorder and panic attacks. I have been through episodes on and off for 12 years. Two years ago I suffered them extreme enough to render me unable to drive or leave the house. I went to a support group and Claire Weekes books were overwhelmingly recommended by other sufferers. I purchased both of her books and read them cover to cover in the same day.

FINALLY! Somebody who has a CLUE what it's all about. I have read dozens of newer books on anxiety but none of them even come close to Dr. Weekes work. Yes, the terminology is "older" and she doesn't attempt to diagnose you. She simply tells you EXACTLY what you are feeling and EXACTLY what to do about it. With common sense, plain language and a sincerity that is impossible to miss.

With the help of her books, and yes some medication I managed to recover completely, function normally and was back out and around more fearless than I'd ever been in my life.

Even after recovery, I set myself a goal for the first two months. Read 20 minutes of Dr. Weekes each day, so I don't forget how to handle fear... "just in case". I became so well, I eventually loaned my books to someone else in need.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book is an absolute treasure!, February 15, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Peace from Nervous Suffering (Signet) (Paperback)
This book is one of the two best books that exist regarding anxiety and panic. The other book is one of Claire Weeks' other works! If you suffer from anxiety/panic this book will be priceless to you. You will feel like the book was written about you and for you. It is so comforting to hear your own "craziness" and thoughts described and explained within the pages. Dr. Weeks' strategies WORK. It isn't easy at first, but with perseverance and belief, her instructions can guide you to recovery. I have an copy that is 8 years old that is very dog eared and highlighted. I have a brand new copy I keep in my safety deposit box "just in case"....it is THAT important to me. If you suffer from anxiety and/or panic, DO NOT hesitate....buy this book and Dr. Weeks' other selection.

5.0 out of 5 stars Peace at last !!!, June 29, 2002

This review is from: Peace from Nervous Suffering (Signet) (Paperback)
I am purchasing my 7th book today. I can only tell you
how this book has helped me. I am purchasing this book for
my sister who recently had a car accident and has started
to have panic attacks. I know that this is the one tool
that I can give her that will put her on the road to
recovering from frightening panic attacks.
I started suffering from them 2 years ago and found this
book to be the number 1 tool that helped me the most.
I would highly recommend that if you suffer from

panic, anxiety, or worry or nervousness this is it.
This book shows you tools on how to handle your next
episode. I wouldn't wish panic, fear, or anxiety on
anyone, but if it happens to you, you can begin healing
by reading this book.
Good luck to you.
