4.0 out of 5 stars Quick, satisfying combo: erotica and psychological thriller
This was the first Zane book I read. The hype about her had gotten to me and I decided to check her out. This isn't fancy literature...this is pure, good old-fashioned writing for fun. But it's well done. The plot moves quickly and like the other reviews have mentioned, you could read this book in one sitting: it keeps you turning pages like that.

This particular book deals with the main character's multiple personality disorder. It's through this that the erotica gets to come out (via one of the "alternate personalities"). There's also some good old fashioned romance in here, family drama, nightlife escapades, and medical/psychological drama (the character of psychiatrist Marcella Spencer is good).

Recommended. Not mind-bending literature, but good fun.

5.0 out of 5 stars 1 part erotica +1 part psychothriller = another Zane hit, January 22, 2005
This review is from: Nervous: A Novel (Paperback)
As Ludacris said in a verse from Usher's 2004 hit "Yeah!" most men want a woman who is "a lady in the streets but a freak in the bed". But what happens when one woman is a lady in the street and is a freak, just not in the bed and she doesn't realize it until it's too late?

This paradoxical problem is faced by Jonquinette, the lead character of Zane's novel "Nervous" which is based on a short story from her earlier collection of erotica "The Sex Chronicles". Jonquinette is a shy young woman who finds herself not too inclined to talk to men interested in her. She doesn't consider herself a total virgin but she doesn't find herself wanting to sleep with just anyone, so her life for the most part is dull.

But when the weekend rolls around, Jonquinette goes to sleep and later re-awakens not as Jonquinette, but as a foul-mouthed and sex-obsessed woman named Jude who goes out and finds wanton and virtually unsafe sexual adventures with anyone and everyone she comes in contact with to find a sexual release.

This behavior goes on until Jude goes to sleep and re-awakens again as Jonquinette. Jonquinette realizes that Jude has been up to her old tricks again (leaving hints of her presence and sexual indiscretions)and realizes that this has to come to a stop here and now, so she heads to talk with Dr. Marcella Palmer, who first appeared in the novel "Addicted". When Jude resurfaces later and realizes that Jonquinette has been seeing Dr. Palmer she goes nuts and really goes full throttle on her sexual escapades.

Later, Jonquinette begins to find herself attracted to a new neighbor that moves in next door. While this is a good thing for Jonquinette, Jude detests the romance because she realizes that if Jonquinette settles down with her new love interest then the sexual party is pretty much over. But will Jude do something that will not only have dire consequences for her, but Jonquinette as well?

This book is definitely a unique combination of Zane's trademark incendiary erotica and a case study in what happens to one person when they know that they have multiple personalities (the seemingly passive/submissive Jonquinette and the aggressive/dominate Jude) and how the actions of one affects the other and all those around them.

This is definitely a book that takes two unique topics and combines them nearly effortlessly to form one major hit form the mistress of African-American erotica, Zane.

5.0 out of 5 stars A MUST READ!!!! If they had 10 stars, that's what its worth, September 24, 2003
This review is from: Nervous: A Novel (Hardcover)
This book was sooo good that I gave it around of applause when I read the last sentence. In order to understand the story, first read the short story in Sex Chronicles, then RUN and get the book. This story has some serious many plot changes, that'll have you not wanting to put it down. I read it in 2 days!!! Zane's writing captures the reader and brings it to you, FULL FORCE.

The final 2 chapters in the book will have you like WHOA!!!! I'm still trippin, LOL. Like I said RUN DONT WALK and purchase this book. It is well worth the money. OOOO for you Addicted lovin folks, Zoe make an appearance in Nervous.

5.0 out of 5 stars ANOTHER WINNER FROM ZANE........!!, September 30, 2003
By
This review is from: Nervous: A Novel (Hardcover)
Zane doesn't disappoint with her tale of a young woman with multiple personalities....the dominant personality is sensitive, reclusive, and a complete sexual innocent. The other, however, is just the opposite; her life is one explicit sexual exploit after another. Jonquinette, the dominant personality, realizes that there is a reason for her "blackouts" and seeks professional help. Enter, the psychologist from "Addicted," who recognizes that Jon has Multiple Personality Disorder--and even meets Jude, who admits to going on sexual rampages and claims to be Jon's "protector."

Zane fans familiar with her work will love the presence of recurring characters (from "Addicted") and Zane of course delivers a steamingly good tale with enough hot sex scenes to scorch a reader's fingers.....

The ending is a mindblower! Great job, Zane, and I'm anxiously awaiting the next........

A great follow up to Addicted which was one of the best books that I've ever read. Nervous really does keep you on your toes wondering what will happen next. That Jude was an evil beyond words. Zane keep up the good work. I can't wait till your new book comes out at the end of the month. It seems that your writing keeps getting more and more creative and has a different twist everytime.

2.0 out of 5 stars Don't get "nervous"..., November 23, 2003
This review is from: Nervous: A Novel (Hardcover)
Zane's novels are typically fun to read and a joy for her to write, I suppose, but this one misses the mark by a lot.

Following her last effort, "Sisters of the APF", Zane writes about something even more dangerously fascinating: a woman's sexual alter-ego. Joniquette is the main character in this novel who wakes up night after night with no recollection of her previous actions and no way to know what is going on during her strange "blackouts".

It turns out that the virgin Joniquette has an uncontrollable alter-ego named, "Jude". Jude loves sex, she craves it, she uses it as a source of leverage and power, she even proclaims herself to be a "total whore" who gives her ... up to whoever wants it whenever they want it and however they want it."

This presents a problem for Joniquette because she has a new love in her life named Mason, and he is willing to go to the ends of the earth to earn her love. "Jude" isn't happy about this because it upsets her ..." 'em and dump 'em" mentality.

The novel moves fine and it's interesting to examine the contradictions of Joniquette's raunchy personality. It's even fun to read about her exploits and enjoy the fact that it's a woman who has no regard for the emotions of her sexual partner, something that men have done to women for years...

Where this book misses is the unfortunate and highly unbelievable climax that negates about the first three quarters of the book. It's not because I don't believe in Jon's condition, it's simply because once I found out more about the problem and how it was triggered, I felt terrible for thinking the first three quarters were sexy. I felt sorry for Joniquette instead of putting down the book and saying, "damn, that was hot."

I also don't believe in Jude's apparent sexual carelessness (she uses no condoms, creams, or any other form of protection), the sudden appearance and disappearance of Jon's third "personality" in the climax or how "Jude" can turn heel as fast as she could and be a nice person in the resolution. And is Marcella real or not??? This makes people who claim to have Jon's problem look bad and it's unfortunate.

Zane is incredibly talented. Her prose flows with the sexual juice squeezed from the best lustful oranges ever to fall off the tree of erotic literature. She writes characters who are easily identifiable and believable. It's just too bad that she writes one for the "Danielle-Steel-novel-made-into-a-USA-TV-Movie" crowd.

5.0 out of 5 stars Zane has done it again!!!, October 14, 2003
This review is from: Nervous: A Novel (Hardcover)
All I can say is, if you haven't read this Zane book already, you are definitely missing something great! I incourage you to read Addicted (another Zane authored book), because it is the first in a 5-book series, with Nervous being the second. Some of the characters from addicted make an appearance in Nervous; to get the full effect of the book, you should read Addicted.

I enjoyed reading this book down to it's last page. It will definitely keep you awake at night, and make you miss your stop on the train a few times (LOL)! The book definitely makes you feel like your right there with Jonquinette, Jude and...... Umm all the other characters.

If you like a real page-turner from beginning to end or you just like Zane books, then you will LOVE this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars UnNeRviNg, September 13, 2004
This review is from: Nervous: A Novel (Hardcover)
"Nervous" will make you nervous. Be forewarned. I haven't read many books by Zane, but this is certainly one of the best reads of the year. The play between the main character, Jonquinette Pierce, and her multiple personality sidekick, Jude, is exhilarating. It also gives the reader a better perspective of people who suffer with a multiple personality disorder. To say you will not be able to put this book down is cliché, but there's no other way to put it. The plot keeps you on the edge anticipating the outcome...And the ending will have you picking your jaw up from the floor.

5.0 out of 5 stars I Want More, June 14, 2004

This review is from: Nervous: A Novel (Hardcover)
First of all Zane you are an excellent writer. Nervous was wonderful. I read it in two days, I just couldn't put it down. It was funny all the emotions that came out of me while reading this book. In the beginning I found myself excited to see what Jude would do, but then I became extremely mad at her. I also found myself getting emotional during Jon and Mason's first night together. It was everything a person should dream their first time to be. I just wish the book was longer to see how the future played out. Zane I can't wait until the next book. Hurry girl I don't I can wait any longer.
