Product Description

Amazon.com Review

Nesco roaster ovens have been around since the 1930s, but this model is fully equipped for modern functionality. Rolling multiple cooking functions into one capacious appliance, the unit roasts, bakes, steams, cooks, and slow-cooks, creating the versatility of a full-size oven without the bulk. Sized to hold 6 quarts, the oven combines stainless-steel housing with a nonstick interior and a wrap-around heating element for moist, even cooking. A domed aluminum lid with steam holes aids in self-basting, and the heavy-gauge insert removes for simplified cleanup. Temperature control is very straightforward--a clearly marked dial on the side rotates through the oven's functions, setting temperature accordingly. In addition, the unit comes with a chrome-plated stainless-steel roasting rack for better circulation during baking and less fat in roasted meat. Sturdy without excessive weight, the oven has stay-cool plastic side handles, and its brushed exterior is efficient if plain. Altogether, the oven measures 16 by 11-1/2 by 9-1/4 inches. Nesco includes a one-year warranty. --Emily Bedard

3.0 out of 5 stars one hot roaster!!!!!, February 25, 2006

I bought this roaster to use as a hot pot, because the hot pot slow cookers on the market today cook things to fast...they boil the dickens out of everything...they are just to hot even on the low setting..

this nesco is pretty good, because it has a variable heat knob but.... its quite dangerous..the outside of it gets so hot, could get a nasty burn if your not careful..even when its turned down to slow cook...the outside is really hot.you need to tell the family that she's a hot pot and don't touch... wish they would have put a little insulation or a heat barrier in the side of the unit to insulate it some....other than that it is a great little unit.. so remember she's hot and she'll make you trot, so touch er' not.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not bad, February 24, 2006

This review is from: Nesco American Harvest 4816-25-30 Non-Stick 6-Quart Roaster Oven, Stainless Steel (Kitchen)
This roaster/oven is ok. Quality is good for the price. Easy to clean. You DO have to break it in. It smokes a lot. I let it bake outside for 2 hours on high and it was fine.

My first meal was a turkey breast and it was great. Very moist. I was disappointed that the somewhat cheesy grill insert thing barely held up to a turkey breast then the lid wouldn't completely close. I used a vegetable steamer insert instead, problem solved.

Second meal was chicken wings and it was ok.

Cooker does come with an excellent recipe book with a lot of great ideas in it.

If you really need a roaster oven then go for it but I don't think it's a must have.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nesco, December 19, 2006
This review is from: Nesco American Harvest 4816-25-30 Non-Stick 6-Quart Roaster Oven, Stainless Steel (Kitchen)
Truly a versatile product. Roast, bake, steam, and slow cook. The 6 qt. is ideal for a small family. It will hold a 3 to 5 lb chicken comfortably. The chicken comes out moist and tender but the skin doesn't brown all that great. I rotate the bird so the breast meat and the back can be exposed to the sides of the cookwell where the heat is generated. That helps a lot. I made my first batch of ribs in the Nesco and they were fall off the bone tender. I debated on browning them under the broiler first but decided to just put them in to see how they would do and they browned nicely. I started them at 350 degrees and let them cook about 45 minutes and then let them slow cook at 250 degrees. I took them out when they were about done, poured off the liquid in the pan, brushed them with sauce, put them back in the cookwell, topped them with orange slices and let them finish cooking. Delicious!

The roaster also performs well as a slow cooker. I have slow cooked turkey wings, beans, and chili with excellent results. I wish I had known of this product before I bought my slow cooker because the roaster would have been the perfect substitute.

Since the Nesco heats from the sides, you have to keep the food items off the sides if you are roasting or baking because they will burn. If you want to make gravy from the pan juices, keep the temperature around 300 degrees and stir it away from the sides to keep it from burning.

The cookwell is non stick and cleans up easily. Baked on food comes off quickly with a quick soak. I am very satisfied with the roaster and have been using it at least 3 times a week.

Make sure you set this in the garage, outside or in a well ventilated area to smoke it out before the first use as indicated in the use and care guide. I set mine in the garage to smoke out and the smell lingered around for awhile.
