Bottom line: This is a pretty average waffle maker that doesn't excel in any area, but doesn't fall significantly short either.

Full review: The Nesco waffle maker makes traditional (i.e., thin) waffles rather than the thick Belgium-style waffles. The manufacturer says the plates are designed to produce "heart" shaped waffles, but I'd describe the shape more like a pie wedge. Still, a nice change from the traditional square or rectangular shape.

There are several pluses to this model. The non-stick coating works well, and releases the waffles easily. Heat-up time is decent, and it has an indicator light that shows when the temperature is correct for usage. The "stay cool" handle is a nice design feature and does help keep your hand from hitting the hot surface. It has a browning level dial at the top.

On the downside, the plates are not removable, which makes clean-up a bit more difficult. The fixed plates also mean it can't be used for anything other than waffles. The handle, while it does stay cool, would benefit from extending further from the housing so you could get a better grip (especially if you have large hands). The browning level is not very accurate - there's a large "dead spot" in the middle of the dial range that seems to have little effect on the waffle doneness.

The cooking was generally even. It clearly has some hot spots near the center that produce a bit of a mottled level of doneness, but nothing that was what I would describe as significantly uneven.

Tip: clean the plates well before using it for the first time. I didn't, and the plates got rather smelly (sort of a plasticy scent) when they heated up. I unplugged it, let it cool, and gave the plates a good cleaning. The second time they heated without any smell.

I needed to replace my old waffle maker as it was a decade old. I'm glad I chose this one. All the waffles I've made with this have turned out crispy and delicious. The heart pattern that you get with this make is unique and cute. They waffles are smaller, thinner and crispier than those made by the waffle maker I got in college, but that's okay because you won't hear a complaint about these. You can control how dark your waffles get with the dial on the very top. The waffle maker only takes three minutes to warm up and three minutes to cook the waffle which is great as you can use this even when in a rush.

The outside is stainless steel and the inside is nonstick aluminum. Clean up is a snap and just as quick as making the waffles. I was extremely impressed with this machine and it doesn't cost an arm and a leg either. The only downside is that he cord seems way too short and it makes plugging in the maker a bit of a chore depending on where the outlets are in your kitchen. All in all though, this is a great buy and a happy addition to my family of kitchen gadgets.

Waffles! Plain, Gingerbread, Chocolate with Chocolate Sauce, Chicken & Waffles, even the waffles topped with vanilla ice cream and maple syrup that used to be party fare with certain friends when I was a girl. Or serve them with a bit of red jam and a dusting of confectioner's sugar like my landlady did when I lived in Germany. Yes, yes - I know you can buy waffles in the freezer section at your favorite grocery store, but homemade are so much better, not to mention less expensive. (And you can make them in chocolate!)

I've been away for a few days and came home to no bread, so this was the perfect morning to give this Nesco WM-1300 Everyday Waffle Maker a workout. Quick to warm up and non-stick so no messy greasing of the plates is necessary, this produces waffles about 7 inches across, each with 6 heart-shaped sections - and nothing could be easier to use. Plug in the closed waffle maker (there is no On/Off switch - most waffle makers don't have them) and wait until the green light comes on (took less than 2 minutes), pour 1/2 cup or so of waffle batter into the center of the bottom plate (just how much will depend on how thick or thin your batter is), close the lid and wait for the steaming to stop - another 2-3 minutes. (Not much more time than it takes to toast the frozen kind.) I use a fork to catch the edge of the waffle for easy removal. You can even choose how light or dark you want your waffles. "Dark" is a beautiful golden brown just about the same color as a "sugar cone" or "waffle" ice cream cone.

With a stay-cool handle and a flat base, the

I'd previously been using a sandwich maker with waffle-insert to make waffles, and it produced thick, Belgian-style ones but was a little bit messy.

This Nesco model produces six heart-shaped waffles, but they are rather slim (more like pancakes) than the chunky Belgian style that many people prefer. Still, it's very easy to use and I had no problems with it. The ability to control the crispness (whether you like your waffles light or dark) is nice, and cleaning it up was easy.

I did notice that you have to be careful not to use too much batter, or it will leak out the back, but that's probably the case for any machine. Also, the instructions recommend using cooking oil spray on the metal pads and I'd suggest respraying them before every cook. When I put blueberries in my waffle batter, they did stick to the heating elements, so this machine is probably better suited to keeping things plain.

Still, everything tasted good and was cooked evenly and properly, so it's hard to complain. Just don't expect chunky, thick Belgian-style waffles!
