I'm an HVAC contractor who's installed and troubleshooted this product in customer's homes for the past couple years and experienced the good, the bad, and the ugly. Let's start with the good.

-It looks great. Personally I don't really care what my thermostat looks like but I know that is very important to many people and the Nest is unmatched in this area.

-When it works, it is hands down the easiest thermostat to install. The ability to sense wires and automatically configure the thermostat is a cool feature you don't see too often. They have a nifty wizard on their website that where you check the wires you have and it figures out what type of system you have and whether or not it will be compatible. Not that I really care, since this is what I do for a living, but for DIYers who have never done something like this before, it's nice.

-In theory, it can control quite a wide range of HVAC systems, including 4 stages of heating, 2 stages of cooling, dual fuel systems, and humidification/dehumidification.

-The customer service reps do genuinely seem to want to help, and there have been cases of them giving refunds even outside of the return period, or paying for visits by HVAC contractors to troubleshoot issues or repair damage caused by the thermostat.

-The auto away and auto learning seem to work as advertised for the most part and IF, a big IF, you didn't program your previous thermostat, they will save you energy. However your money would be put to much better use by spending 10 minutes reading the manual of your traditional thermostat and programming it (even if its unintuitive, it's not something you have to do often).

I received and installed my second-gen Nest thermostat about three weeks ago and was initially very happy with it. Simple to install, beautiful, easy to use, it is certainly all that. Unfortunately, it lacks one characteristic that a thermostat MUST have. It is not robust. It fails under circumstances that a $50 hardware store thermostat would have no problems with, and when it fails it DOES NOT FAIL SAFE - which is a pretty major problem when you're talking about a device that is controlling expensive heat and cooling (and, in a cold climate, keeping your pipes from freezing!)

I was pretty surprised to come home today to a sweltering-hot apartment when the outside temperature was in the mid-to-high sixties. It's a brand-new apartment, very well insulated, and initially I simply thought that all the sun streaming through the skylights and windows was responsible for the high temperature. The Nest indicated that it was 86 degrees inside and of course, with a set point of 50 degrees, it was obviously not heating. (Right?) I set the temperature to 75 and switched it to cooling mode. Cool air started streaming from the AC vents - great. Should cool down in a little while. (Right?) After thirty minutes with the AC on, I was if anything more uncomfortable, so I went over to the Nest again - imagine my surprise when I saw that the inside temperature had gone up to 89 degrees! At this point I knew something was very wrong. It took only a few seconds to determine that the Nest had my heating on full bore - even while the AC was cooling. No wonder the place was sweltering!

Update: If the 'downvotes' are coming from Nest employee accounts (my sincere apologies if not, but it's suspicious they all came at the same time and almost instantly as soon as this review became live), I suggest you redirect your efforts to provide a better consumer service experience for everyone else rather than attack an honest review reflecting a real life experience. This is an all-out honest review from a real person with home heating issues, who has used your product, wanted to truly appreciate it, and went to great lengths to make it work without success, so I will continue to criticize if your product needs improvement and send praises for quality where credit is due. You've nailed the aesthetics and usability, neglected on reliability and customer service. If you have a specific rebuttal to any of the above points, or reject any of the above claims, feel free to provide them in the comments section and I will be happy to participate in the debate. Otherwise move along and improve these weak areas.

I purchased the nest with high anticipation that it would be a stylish and automated replacement for my existing Honeywell. But alas, a malfunctioned unit, high damage potential to the heating system, nightmarish customer service support, and a forced return of the device will leave me waiting for something else to come along.

Aesthetics - 4/5
Very pleasing, it is like having HAL 2000 in your room. The iOS app and web based interface are very pleasantly designed, and can be accessed remotely. The remote interface includes humidity and outside temperature levels (which are curiously absent from the device's display).
