Book Description

Songline Guides January 8, 1997

Whatever your profession or avocation, NetResearch teaches you how to locate the information you need in the constantly changing online world.

Whether you're using the Net to research statistics for a report, to find free software, or to locate an old college roommate, it pays to locate online information rapidly. But the Net is a very big, disorganized place and it can be difficult to locate just the information you want, when you need it. In NetResearch, you'll learn effective search techniques that work with any Internet search programs, present or future, and will build intuition on how to succeed when searches fail. Throughout the book, the author offers quizzes to help you practice your own research skills or to use as a teaching tool to help others.

Covers the Internet, America Online, CompuServe, Microsoft Network, and Prodigy.

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

By now, many of us know that the vast information resources on the Net can be more info glut than info gold mine. NetResearch offers basic strategies and techniques for finding what you want without wasting a lot of time. Each chapter has pertinent short case studies and a practice "quiz" to ensure that you understand the material and,far more important, can use it.

From Library Journal

No, this is not yet another book listing supposedly neat sites on the web that have changed completely since the author looked at them. Barrett's approach is to teach the techniques, strategies, and realities of finding information online. Topics covered include basics for beginners; starting points; search techniques and engines; finding places, people, and software; and putting new information online. If you are teaching anyone how to use the net, this is perhaps the best book to coordinate lessons around. An excellent teaching guide and a good work for individualized learning.

More About the Author

Thanks for looking at my books on Amazon. I've been writing about technical/computer topics since the early 1990s.

These days my interests focus on the intersection of technology and people. Great software isn't enough: you need to get people to use it, and use it efficiently and productively. Wikis are a great example, particularly in corporate environments.

5.0 out of 5 stars Emphasizes Skills not Heft, January 4, 1999

This review is from: NetResearch: Finding Information Online (Songline Guides) (Paperback)
Unlike so many books in the Internet/Computer field, this one does not try to sell itself with bulk. Many 400 page books contain maybe 50 pages of worthwile information and a lot of filler. This one follows the old maxim that it's better to teach a person to fish than give a person a fish. NetResearch gives a good overview of Internet research and teaches you how to think like a researcher. Since search tools constantly change, this book will not quickly become obsolete, because most search tool contain their own help pages to introduce the latest features. The understanding of how to choose and combine search methods and tools, however, is what this book is all about.
