4.0 out of 5 stars Pass test with both Sybex and Novell Press books
I bought both the Novell Press and Sybex books for the NetWare 5 update exam and was able to pass the test on the first try. (I always buy a NP and a Sybex book, whenever possible, for each Novell certification test I take.) The Novell Press book was a little better, but if you have any experience with NetWare 5 and TCP/IP, these 2 books will do the job for you.

3.0 out of 5 stars Hey, it worked for me!!!
Interested in updating my CNE 4.11 to 5, I purchased this book as my only training source. (I have yet to actually use Netware 5) After reading the book cover to cover, and then studying the Chapter reviews and practice test, I took the update test and passed on the first attempt. Granted, it does seem to leave out quite a bit of information on the new NSS product,...

1.0 out of 5 stars This book smells bad..., May 19, 2000
This review is from: NetWare 5 CNE: Update to NetWare 5 Study Guide (Hardcover)
This book stinks! This book does not prepare you for the exam. For example, it states different system requirements than stated by Novell. It also leaves a lot to the imagination regarding real world setup and configuration. It doesn't go into enough detail about NSS, NLS, DNS. These people should owe me 100 bucks!

2.0 out of 5 stars Not Willing to Risk $95 After Reading This Book, July 30, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: NetWare 5 CNE: Update to NetWare 5 Study Guide (Hardcover)
This book inadequately prepares you for the Certification test. Considering the questions that were asked during the test which I heard from other CNE's, I would like to get an alternate book, and get my money back for this "outline". Certainly, with my knowledge of NetWare 5 from the book, I won't risk putting down $95 for certification.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not a bad book....., February 9, 2001
By
Doesn't Matter (New York City, NY) - See all my reviews
This review is from: NetWare 5 CNE: Update to NetWare 5 Study Guide (Hardcover)
This wasn't the strongest Sybex book I've ever purchased, but it worked well when used with other resources. Not a bad book. Keeping in mind that this book is written for the experienced IT professional, after all, you are supposed to be a CNE already, it covers what it needs to. It makes the points of what will be on the test and does an adequate job of it. The practice tests were probably the most useful portion of the book.

Remember that the purpose of this book is to assist you in passing the test, not to be a real world reference. If you want a real world reference manual, buy a Netware 5 reference book, not a test study guide.

1.0 out of 5 stars Agree with Robert Smith's review, but would say "stinks", August 21, 2000
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: NetWare 5 CNE: Update to NetWare 5 Study Guide (Hardcover)
This book confuses the student by calling the Zenworks Desktop Management component "Workstation Manager". Leaves out phase 4 & 5 of the Zenworks setup process, mixing all into only 3 phases. Never mentions "ReRegister Workstations". Coverage of DNS Resource objects is minimal. It completely leaves out any discussion of A-Records, MX-Records, NS-Records, and PTR-Records. Is very weak on DNS & DHCP IMPORTING of databases, and adding licenses later. No mention of NSS Resource objects, such as MMibm, and others as on the test. Recommend Clarkes notes instead!

1.0 out of 5 stars Nothing more than Sybex Bantha Fodder, May 21, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: NetWare 5 CNE: Update to NetWare 5 Study Guide (Hardcover)
After reading the negative reviews for the Novell Press Update to NetWare 5 book, I was hopeful that Sybex would produce something of better quality. Unfortunately, I have nothing decent to comment on concerning this futile attempt at a study guide. At its best, it's great bookshelf filler. Do not purchase if you expect to pass the exam. Contrary to what is written on the front cover, it does not have 'All the information you need to update your CNE certification'. This book lacks a great deal of useful information making this nothing more than a glorified brochure on NetWare 5.

1.0 out of 5 stars Just summary, no details., May 19, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: NetWare 5 CNE: Update to NetWare 5 Study Guide (Hardcover)
I used the Sybex books on variety self study subjects, and my experience was very positive. But it is not on this one. The 529 test is the best-written one among those I has passed. It covers almost everything about NetWare 5. This book is far short on subjects.

1.0 out of 5 stars Inaccurate, Many Typos, Does Not Cover Course Material, May 19, 1999
This review is from: NetWare 5 CNE: Update to NetWare 5 Study Guide (Hardcover)
I bought this after having had very good experiences with Sybex's Cisco accreditation range of books by Tod Lammle/Don Porter etc.

I assumed all Sybex's books would be good. I was wrong.

Fortunately I also had the Netware courseware and some self test software which actually got me the CNE5.

If I had used this book as my sole study guide there is no way I could have passed - it misses out a great deal of the required material - does not go into enough practical detail (e.g. commands etc.) for the material it does cover, and is highly confusing (e.g. repeatedly mixing up DNS and NDS in a Netware manual? - this is not a recipe which will clarify the subjects in your mind especially if you were new to the two topics).

OK - all books have typos, even the Novell and Cisco courses; but this book looks like it may not even have been proof read.

I think I will only buy Sybex books by the authors of the Cisco material in the future.

I pity the poor devils who lost £ and a days pay trying to pass the CNE5 with this.

In its defense - its cheap...

2.0 out of 5 stars Book does not cover Exam topics Well, April 25, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: NetWare 5 CNE: Update to NetWare 5 Study Guide (Hardcover)
I recently purchased and read the mentioned guide and I must admit there is not enough information in this guide for the exam. The book is a good pre exam refresher but nothing more.
