This is the second self-published/indie book I've read that I actually really enjoyed. In a row, no less. Maybe I am getting better at picking the good ones out of the haystack.

There were some definite flaws with editing on occasion. Not too many, but when they showed, they always seem to jump out of the page at me. Maybe because it is the fact that I am a writer too. I don't know. But editing mistakes (i.e. spelling, punctuation, and wrong words used) really make me stumble when I read. There weren't as many in Ms. Rae's book as I have encountered in many other self-pubbed/indie books. So, I'm keeping this at a minimum. (I would have loved to have done a line-by-line critique/edit for her on this. Not everyone can see every error. Even the big 6. And I believe that having at least one or two betas/critiques that are good with copy editing, as well as a professional copy editor, are essential.)

Overall, I enjoyed reading this book. It was a fast-paced, easy to read story with engaging scenes. With Ms. Rae's choice of 1st person of the two main characters, I struggled at first, but it allowed the reader to get into the head of both Ava and Devon. The book was definitely filled with strong emotions. As a reader, though, I felt more connected with Ava. Because this is the first in a series, I was left wondering what happens next and can't wait to read the next installment.

So often in the YA genre we read books that have a weak heroine. One who is co-dependant on a guy, so in love she's sick, whiney, weak, the list goes on and on.

Nether Bound is refreshing in this sense; that Ava is a heroine whom we can all look up to. She is strong, loves her family fiercely; her attitude and bravery almost remind me of Katniss Everdeen in the beloved Hunger Games series.

This story is a quick read, offers a well-developed plot, and strong characters. Really, what more could you ask for? Two thumbs up. Recommended for The Keeper Shelf, folks.

More About the Author

Bonnie Rae spent her early childhood in the sunny state of California. At the time, she was an only child with a very large imagination. Thanks to her Grandmother, the love of reading books started at a very young age. Every walk to the grocery store meant an ice cream cone and a new Little Golden Book. Through books, Bonnie learned you could be transported into other worlds. The addiction was instant.

At age eleven, her grandparents gave her E.B. White's Charlotte's Web for her birthday. Even though she was completely grossed out when it came to spiders (and still is), Charlotte's Web fascinated her. A spider that was able to weave words and befriend a pig? Bonnie then realized not only could books provide imaginary worlds, they confirmed anything was possible. She might have only been eleven, but she knew writing was what she wanted to do.

She started her first set of novels at the age of sixteen and has been writing ever since.

Bonnie currently lives in California with her wonderful husband and two very spoiled cats.
