Diamond in the rough,
By Alissa LeMerise (Michigan) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Netherworld [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Under-rated in the world of horror movies, The Netherworld is a hidden treasure! A young man inherits his estranged father's estate and discovers his father's dying wish: To be brought back to life. His desire to get to know the father he never met gets the better of him and, with the help of a mysterious woman, he goes about fulfilling the wish. However, there is an unexpected catch.... And he must decide if he's willing to pay the price. The exotic setting and hauntingly beautiful soundtrack add to the mystery and appeal of this movie. A true gem!!

Netherworld,
This review is from: Netherworld (DVD)
I have added this movie to my ever growing collection of Out Of Print (oop) Full Moon videos. However, now the DVD has been re-released. I just watched the video yesterday. I must say, this was a very interesting picture. I think I was expecting a little more from it, but was satisfied w/ the twist at the end. very colorful. Never coming out and saying it dealt w/ Voodoo, it did use different ascepts of the religion to convey its self to the audience. A young man inherits his estranged & deceased father New Orleans Plantation. He comes to find black magic at play and his fathers dying wish to be brought back to life. A sleazy bar/brothell, people turned into birds and such are just a few of the many things that make this movie interesting and worth watching.

A movie that brings to the depths of dark imagination.David Schmoeller succeeds in showing us a fresh new idea that show the spectator how possible it is to bring new stuff to the horror genre.A must see for the fans of Charles Band's Full Moon House of terror.

I gave this movie 5 stars, because it reminded me enough of Hitchcock mixed with Charles Dickens topped off with Cajun suave that it made it a viewing pleasure. It would have been better if they had left out the special effects and concentrated more on a good evil storyline. The characters turn in good performances, but the story is in parts quite brutal. Denise Gentile is my forever favorite actress in her stunning beauty and nuances of her talent, but she never gets to do much besides the obvious. 5 stars, because they honestly all tried and succeeded past a B movie and were quirky enough to make you smile.

It's a little dated, but I LOVE this movie. I first saw Netherworld in the 1990's and have never forgotten it. Yes - it has a few corny parts (the guy that gets turned into a cheezy fake bird for example), but what good horror movie doesn't have some "less then well done" scenes? This is a classic movie that any fan of horror/Voo Doo movies should own.

So, you may have to take this movie with a 5lb. brick of Velveeta, but you know, it's a pretty cool (and hot!) movie. The scenery is lovely, the cinematography excellent, and the music fantastic. It has its flaws, yes - but all in all, it is a visually stunning movie. I saw it years ago (10+) and I can still see certain scenes in my head today. Oscar winner, no... but it's definately worth a look.

Look and listen a little deeper. Better than it initially appears. Could be a cult classic.
