5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book that covers a lot!
I found the book to be packed with useful examples. With so many useful examples I don't believe the previous reviewer even read this book! The book covers a lot of ground and is a book for developers.

3.0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive, but out of date
This book covers a lot of ground, but is out of date with the newest Netscape servers (just try and use SiteManager). I'd like to see a 2nd edition with less intro on Javascript and Java (I think there are over 200 other books that cover the same introductory material) and more in depth coverage of advanced Java, JavaScript, and server-side programming.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not a good reference - disorganized, March 12, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Netscape One Developer's Guide (Paperback)
This book fails to meet some standards for a reference it assumes to be. The source codes and examples are not in accordance, the book is full of useless examples and errors are abundant. Of course it is superior to "Dummies...", "Idiots ..." and similar books but I expected more.

2.0 out of 5 stars Upside Down and Disorganized Overall, March 12, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Netscape One Developer's Guide (Paperback)
This book is supposed to be a reference but since it suffers of many errors and tend to be overall confusing - for example it is trully unbelievable how the authors, writing such an exhaustive treatise, could not figure out better way to match source codes and topics. Some examples really make no practical sense at all, other are unclear or unprecise, the reference is incomplete or mistaken and in general it is hard to count on the book as a guide. I believe the second edition is badly needed to improve the style and clarity of the first.

5.0 out of 5 stars Solid. Practical and useful!, December 13, 1997
By A Customer
This review is from: Netscape One Developer's Guide (Paperback)
This is one a several Stanek books I bought and use! If you've never read a Stanek book I believe you are in for a treat. The author provides practical and useful advice. Covers JavaScript, LiveWire, Netscape IFC and plugin programming and LiveConnect. Does so better than books that focus only on these topics. I say buy it. You'll use it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Interesting. A refreshing change from the norm., October 16, 1997
By A Customer
This review is from: Netscape One Developer's Guide (Paperback)
I learned something (well a lot of somethings) from reading this book which is definitely a welcome change. Never the less I don't agree with all the praise for this book. To me the book is a practical handson guide to learning JavaScript, LiveWire, Netscape IFC, PlugIn Programming and LiveConnect. I liked it for its practicality and applicability to my development efforts.

5.0 out of 5 stars Learn how things are really done!, October 10, 1997
By A Customer
This review is from: Netscape One Developer's Guide (Paperback)
I don't remember where I saw it (perhaps the NY Times book review) but someone somewhere said when you want to learn Web stuff you should pick up a Stanek book and learn how things are REALLY done. Call me a skeptic but I always have to check things out for myself.

I did a bit of background checking on Stanek's Web sites which the reviewer raved about. His commercial Webs are quite well done and cover the range of ma and pa operations to Fortune 500. His personal Webs are good and interesting. I found Internet Job Center (tvpress.com/jobs/) to be very impressive. I also liked the Internet Daily News archive site (tvpress.com/idn/).

Mr. Stanek's background, resume and cv are also online (tvpress.com/writing/). His 12+ years of hard-core computer experience, teaching positions and more sold me on the idea that I should check out his books. I took a look at this book and several others at borders.

As someone who develops Web sites for a living I didn't think I would learn anything new. Turns out I was wrong. I learned a great deal. In my opinion this book is terrific for readers of many different skill levels. Beginners will start learning on page 1. More advanced like myself will learn from the many invaluable insights. If you plan to publish a cutting-edge home page or are Web developer/programmer/architect I recommend that you buy Web Publishing Unleashed Professional and Netscape ONE Developers Guide.

5.0 out of 5 stars 1 of 3 Stanek books I've purchased!, September 23, 1997
By A Customer
This review is from: Netscape One Developer's Guide (Paperback)
I love the book. It opened doors for me and taught me so much. HOWEVER, I have to disagree with some of the other reviewers. The reason I choose this book over the others had more to do with Stanek's expert advice and experience in the field than his writing.

Don't get me wrong. His writing style is good. Entertaining. Informative. Thorough. HOWEVER, his wonderful insights and years of practical experience ARE the reason you should buy his books. I say pick up a Stanek book and learn how things are really done.

5.0 out of 5 stars Got me my job and that's no joke!, September 13, 1997
By A Customer
This review is from: Netscape One Developer's Guide (Paperback)
I went in for a job interview a few months back. The interview was going well or so I thought, then the interviewer asked me what the last Web development book I read was. I told him it was this book. He told me I made a good choice. One thing lead to the other and he hired me the same day. Turns out he's a hard core fan of Stanek's Web books and has a row of them on his desk.

Needless to say, I now have a row of Stanek books on my desk as well. I use Netscape ONE Dev Guide whenever I work with Netscape client/server solutions, scripting, plug-ins, Java. The book is well written, comprehensive and actual interesting, which is something you can't say about most computer books.

Should you buy the book or not? I don't see how you can lose. Its a win win.
