Editorial Reviews

Review

"The stated audience includes the clinician population, everyone who cares for patients. But that understates the strength of the book, which is the added benefit for those who learn more easily through visual effects and graphics. This is an extremely valuable resource for those students...This is an extremely useful book, with the major strengths being the illustrations and evidence sections. Because of these, the book is a very worthwhile addition to a medical library, particularly in teaching institutions." --Doody's Review Service

As a med student who has studied from Harrison's, UpToDate, and other resources but has often been left wondering how to put it all together, Netter's Internal Medicine has been an exciting find. Compared to other textbooks I've tried, Netter's IM has been the most efficient use of study time in reading broadly. Chapters cover important symptoms and disease states in digestible chunks, making it easy to read about patients in 5-10 minutes to understand their medical issues and how to best present them on rounds. Clinically relevant material is prioritized and underlying pathophysiology complemented by Netter's illustrations in a manner that promotes understanding (and retention). Current best practices in diagnosis and management are presented in well-designed algorithms and tables that are quickly accessible, so the book is useful as a reference as well as a learning tool. When you want to dig in further on a particular issue, references to best evidence included with each chapter will keep you from losing time on PubMed and reading less important primary articles. The Infectious Disease, Hematology/Oncology, Cardiology, and Gastroenterology chapters are especially strong. The Preventative Medicine tables in Chapter 2 are a great distillation of the confusing literature on this subject. I'll be carrying copies of these (along with a number of other tables & algorithms from this book) in my pocket as an intern next year. The best comparison to Netter's IM is probably the MKSAP review books, which are far more expensive and to me less readable at this point in my training. I strongly recommend this book to anyone wanting to learn medicine, especially to med students on medicine clerkships. It's made studying more productive, efficient, and enjoyable.

I have always wanted a book to reference the visually appealing Netter images (that we all rely on heavily in our medical education) with clinically relevant information. This comprehensive book has both. I was very impressed to see many of the images that I had to tediously find in my Netter's Anatomy book referenced appropriately throughout the system based chapters. These chapters give an excellent overview of the main pathophysiology, clinical presentation, differential diagnosis, and management and therapy. I would highly recommend this book to any medical student, physician, or health-science individual wanting an approximately 5 page summary of a clinical problem with extremely useful and applicable Netter images leading to an efficient, yet thorough review. A must buy.

I used Netters Internal Medicine as a 3rd and 4th year medical student and found the text to be a great resource. It included all the information I needed including basic science review without being too tedious. I also found it much more readable than other comprehensive texts. In contrast to review books that other students used, each chapter provided a more thorough explanation to the theory and methodology behind the diagnostic tests and management decisions. This not only helped me remember the subject material, but actually understand the disease process and therapeutic interventions, thus making my participation during rounds and patient care much more relevant and meaningful. The 2nd edition comes with more chapters and an online version that is helpful because you can search the text more easily, browse through the many illustrations and diagrams and it also provides printable patient information for common topics such as breast cancer screening and COPD management
