For newbies to Networking,
This review is from: Network+ 2005 In Depth (Paperback)
If you are brand new to the world of network administration this is the book for you. It covers everything IN DEPTH, and will give you enough knowledge to function as a Junior Network Admin. It will give you the answers to questions most other books will not. This book is more of a text book for Network Administration as well as a cert guide. For those who are looking for a more "refresher book" or have been in the field for awhile, I recommend something that gets more down to the necessities of the test. I found this book a long read and since I have been in the Networking field for well over 4 years I switched to the Sybex 4th. edition. I still use this book as a reference book for things I don't understand and for real life issues.

I got Network+ certified using this book (along with the companion Q&A). It covered almost everything on the exam. You get your moneys worth if you want to get certified.

If your desire is to fully understand the principles of the CompTIA Network+ exam, you should consider a different book. If your desire is to add a book with a large page count of useless information, then you have selected the correct book.
I recently used this book as part of a Network+ class, and we found a tremendous number of errors, and quite a few topics that were either not covered, or covered superficially. The description of the OSI model was enough to know the names of each layer, but not the functions of each layer. The section on IP addressing lacked some very basic elements. There was no mention of the private IP addressing range. In regards to the CompTIA Network+ exam, there are very few books available. There should be one less.

Excellent Preparation,

I am multi-certified and also teach networking technology. This book is a very good introduction to networking and very well organized and reasoned. It does have a few typos, but I have never seen a technical book that did not (and I am a technical editor as well).
This book is good prep for the exam. If you are a very experienced and trained IT pro (with perhaps two or three years under your belt) there are better choices, but if you are trying to enter the field with only home computing skills or desktop skills you cant go wrong with this book.

Excellent self study resource,

This book, combined with Network+ 2005 Q&A, was my primary resource for Network+ certification prep. Prior to picking up this book, my knowledge of networking was virtually zero. Upon completion of this book, I was able to passed the Network+ certification exam first time out. This book is not an easy read, but contains all the information you will need to know to achieve certification. I recommend it highly.

I got my net+ certification by using this book as my main source, along with some online q&a tests. It's not the greatest network+ book ever, but if you want to know the basics of networking (and want to be network+ certified) without spending too much money, then this book it's for you. If you want something more than that, look for another book.

I used this book as one of my study resources for the Network+ certification exam. To be honest, I didn't do much studying from this text, I just read through it to get an overview of the subject matter, before getting into a more rigorous study routine.
Whether you are planning on taking the certification exam or not, this book is a fantastic read with all kinds of useful information on IT and Telecommunications Networking. Because it is intended to be a study guide, it is also laid out very well and gives enough depth to be interesting but is not overbearing. If you are a home-enthusiast or a network professional, this book servers as a great desktop reference, and also looks pretty sweet wedged between all your other IT books. Trust me on this one.

Excellent book. Every chapter has Review Questions, Key Terms and an in depth Summary, not to mention illustrations, tables (and even pics of how the hardware and cables look like!). Each chapter is well written. The book is deep in material. Some books will throw you into the deep end of the pool for each topic. I like this author in how the reader is gently walked through so as not to get confused. I think its better than the exam cram book. I didn't notice the problems the other poster mentioned, maybe I better read it again to try to find what that person is talking about.

Vendor-Independent IS the Key Word,
By
This review is from: Network+ 2005 In Depth (Paperback)
This book has two purposes:
First, this book will tell you how to install, configure, and troubleshoot a vendor-independent computer network. Note the words vendor-independent. The modern company may well find itself with a NetWare network in accounting, Apples in marketing, Unix/Linux on the servers, and of course PC's. Not too many books cover all of these together. That's both together in the book and together in the network. Second, this book is also styled as a study guide to the CompTIA Network+ 2005 certification exam. It has sample questions and a general approach that is consistent with the CompTIA philosophy. Tamara Dean has worked in networking for over 14 years in a wide variety of companies and organizations. She has implemented the kinds of systems that she is writing about here. She is also a skilled writer, having written books several networking guides before. This has given her an understanding of what the reader needs and she has included this understanding in this book. |
