All you need to pass exam,
By A Customer
This review is from: Network+ Certification For Dummies (Paperback)
Hats off to Mr Gilster again. I also used his A+ book which I found excellent. Although N+ is generally an excellent book, I do have a few niggles. It seems that the book was probably rushed out as there are numerous errors including some wrong answers. I was also frustrated to find that although the book claims to be validated by Sento for technical accuracy with updates supposedly at their site, a visit to the site proved otherwise as this book is not registered with them. Once you know the material the errors should be easy to spot as a lot of material is repeated in the different chapters that it relates to. I sat the N+ course which used Wave Tech course material, however, I used Dummies to study for the exam and got 92%. One word of advice, even though Ron says the exam covers only the first 4 OSI layers, know the rest as they turned up as wrong answers on my test.

A Great Book!,
This review is from: Network+ Certification For Dummies (Paperback)
I read this book from cover to cover as my main learning aid for Network+ certification. I passed on my first try with a score of 85%. The author did a great job in the format of the book, chapters are short and point out the important stuff. He pounds the information into your head by summarizing it before going into the detail, and throughout the book he goes over the important stuff again. The end of chapter exams are great as well as the end of book exam. The practice tests on the CD are worth the money alone. I did find some errors but that just helped me to understand those particular areas better. Besides, try to find a book without errors, you won't. Great Book! Highly Reccomend!

Network+ Certification for Dummies,
By felix26_99 (San Jose, California) - See all my reviews

Despite at least four or five typeos, the author does a very good job of explaining networking in simple language. He keeps the chapters short. The companion cd is very helpful. This book is much better and $20 cheaper than the New Riders Network+ Study Guide.

If you're looking for a concise study guide, you've found it,

Out of the three Network+ study guides I've purchased, this one is the best. The book is very straight-forward in that it only talks about what you really need to know to pass the test. The author does a good job of reiterating important points. There were some inaccuracies in the practice test, but when I e-mailed the editorial company, they were quick to admit fault and to correct the errors for the next edition. Very good study guide, but I would recommend purchasing a book like Coriolis' Exam Prep for the Network+ which is more comprehensive (as a reference). I passed the Network+ with an %89 and used this book as my primary study guide.

The book is good, but the CD is nothing to talk about.,
By Matt "mattfl1" (FL United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Network+ Certification For Dummies (Paperback)
The book is well written and definitely helped my understanding of networking, but the CD (with the tests on it) isn't anything great. The questions are very poorly worded. For example (straight from the CD):"In order to prevent end-users from loading problematic applications on the network, what should you do? A. Run regular tape backups B. Install anti-virus software C. Do not purchase machines with Floppy Disks and CDROMS D. Do not allow access to the Internet" The answer is "A." The question was "what should you do to keep users from installing problematic applications, not "what should you do to prevent end users from infecting the network with a virus."

This is a good book for whom it is intended for; networking dummies! I had no previous networking experience before taking the Net+, so this was a great introductory guide to the networking world. Emphasis on INTRODUCTORY! There is a lot that the book did not cover that is on the exam. The exam also expects one to know the information in much more detail than the book gives. I recommend using not only the dummies book, but also the Cram Session Guide, transcenders, and Self-Test Software. Also, as I said with the A+ for Dummies review, a great study partner can be one's greatest resource!

Network+ Certification For Dummies,
By A Customer
This review is from: Network+ Certification For Dummies (Paperback)
A cost effective certification book, all the rewards in half the time compared to more expensive and voluminous books. I scored 95%. The CDROM is better than the book. Majority of Network+ material on the market are really overkill. N+ certification is really a waterdown version of Microsoft Network Essentials and TCP/IP. I have no real professional network experinece. All I got is my A+ and two semester of Cisco Network Academy.

I also have the Ron Gilster A+ and CCNA books, The A+ had errors and needed to be constantly checked. The CCNA is to uninformative, but this book... I passed with 96% using only this book. The content is easy to understand, is acceptably detailed and somewhat fun to read. The practice questions were good, albeit a few errors as I recall, but otherwise good. I would deffinantly recommend this book to anyone wanting to get their network+. Even if you have read the Sybex version, you can still get clearer on some of the issues using this book. I cant give it 5 stars on the basis of a few errors, which for a technical book, is almost unacceptable. Ron Gilster is pretty good at keeping a dry humorless subject like networking, interesting for easily distracted, easily bored people like me. I would deffinantly get this book if I ever had it to do all over again. A must buy.

The Only Book I Used. Scored 92%.,
By Dave (Connecticut, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Network+ Certification For Dummies (Paperback)
Ron Gilster delivers it all, and at the lowest cost out there. In a concise, time-saving manner this book gave me all the material I needed to learn for the test, and I'm not an IT professional (yet). Based on one of Ron's recommendations in the last part of the book, I bought Jeff Thorssell's (Dalidesign.com) practice test software along with a discounted test voucher from Jeff that paid for the software--what a deal! I put the book away after one read-through and one quick review. Then I repeatedly took the "Dummies" software tests and Thorssell's practice tests until I consistently scored well into the 90's. Knew I was ready. Sailed through the test with no anxiety whatsoever. The whole process took three weeks. By the way, a few months ago I also got A+ certified with nothing but Gilster's A+ "Dummies" book and Thorssell's test software (and discounted vouchers). Yes, I got both certs for less than $50 investment. What more can I say except thanks, Ron and Jeff, for superb products!!! |
