Book Description

Prentice Hall Series on Microsoft Technologies January 15, 1999
Enterprise developers increasingly face the challenge of network programming with Windows NT. This book offers practical, hands-on guidance - walking through the construction of several common network applications. Expert TCP/IP developer John Murphy introduces Win32 file I/O and demonstrates how to build multi-threaded Windows applications. Next, he covers sockets - both synchronous and asynchronous. You'll take a detailed look at the widely used Winsock 1.0 and the important new 2.0 upgrade. Murphy covers WinInet, the Internet Server API (ISAPI), Asynchronous Monikers, and more. This is must-reading for all Windows developers building networked applications.

From the Back Cover

The real-world guide to TCP/IP development under Windows NT!

In NT Network Programming Toolkit, John Murphy walks you through every key concept and technique you'll need to know to build great networked applications for Windows NT.

No matter what your expertise or background in network and MFC programming, this book delivers just the right level of detail. For each network protocol covered, John Murphy begins with a high-level explanation, moves on to a detail-oriented discussion of commands, arguments and response; and concludes with specific techniques for building event sequences. Along the way, you'll build a complete suite of real-world NT network applications!

You'll master network programming fast. All topics are introduced at a very high level assuming no prior knowledge of network programming, gradually get more detailed and culminate in the development of a networking application. 1.0 out of 5 stars Books delivers no good examples!, June 22, 1999
This review is from: NT Network Programming Toolkit (Paperback)
Yes, the first chapters are good. Yes, they explain the the way sockets work. But, does this book give a single concise example ... NO! The book has reviews online and on the back of the book, which state, "No prior knowledge nessecary," and "Great for Beginners!" Well I've written network code on UNIX before and I have some limited experience on NT; but I couldn't figure out the books examples. Not to mention I had a hell of a time getting the projects off the CD-ROM and into a workspace. (I was never able to convert the projects, I could just get the *.cpp and *.h files) All in all, this book is not for someone who with little experience.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great introduction, awful code., May 19, 1999
This review is from: NT Network Programming Toolkit (Paperback)
Great introduction to the concepts. Thin book. Thin chapters. The only downsides are the AppWizard screen shots and the general grunginess of the example code. If you use the code from the book as actual production code then you are going to be building yourself an expressway to your own personal maintenance hell.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent book - one of a kind!, January 27, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: NT Network Programming Toolkit (Paperback)
Spent ages looking for a book that explained in simple terms the major Internet protocols and how to implement them under NT using MFC. And here it all is! Complete with examples, each implementation is explored in detail from the ground up. Definitely a must-have for Windows NT network programmers (or any programmer who has to deal with nework protocols).
