5.0 out of 5 stars Picked it up for Sec+ now, GSEC later
This was a decent book on security. I actually picked this book up to provide additional material for the Security+ (which was very easy by the way) and to provide something to help me self study for GSEC in the coming months. I found this book to be very useful for both cert and non cert study. It can be a little dry at times but that is to be expected.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great Book, But..........
This is a great book; it goes in great detail about security in all aspects of the computer industry. However it lacks one critical aspect, how do I do that? Like all network and computer professionals, I do not know everything, so when you tell me I should do something a certain way I'd hope that you will also tell me how to do it. With this book I found myself saying,...

This is a great book; it goes in great detail about security in all aspects of the computer industry. However it lacks one critical aspect, how do I do that? Like all network and computer professionals, I do not know everything, so when you tell me I should do something a certain way I'd hope that you will also tell me how to do it. With this book I found myself saying, maybe they will tell me what to do later, over and over, never happens. If you want to buy a book that's a reference manual, this is the one to get. If you are looking for a "how to" as well as a "what to look for" book, consider looking elsewhere.

This is one of the best network security books I have read. It covers a broad area, and the authors have done their research well. Even topics like steganography, which many books fail to address, are covered. Its up to date threat examples are extremely helpful.

3.0 out of 5 stars Initial thoughts, June 7, 2011

I am using this book for a class. The title and table of contents looked exciting on the book, but I have found that many of the chapters contain information that is rather old. My environment is a mixed shop of linux, windows, and mac systems. I found the author's notations that IE is the only really prevalent browser out there to be incorrect and out of date. His thought that since IE is prevalent that browser security issues affecting IE affect all the other browsers (which he alludes is Netscape Navigator).

The writing style of the book - although seems spread out is very dry in the initial 10 chapters. Some great interspersing of real world examples would have made the book more engaging.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book for security professionals, June 7, 2011
I've had the pleasure of attending a class taught by the author and not only is he extremely knowledgeable, but presents the material in an interesting manner. The book is well written, well laid out is very useful in helping to improve an existing security plan. I highly recommend this book.
