not great but still has some useful info,
By Mark (Manila, Philippines) - See all my reviews

First off, this book could have been a lot shorter if the editing was done better. Many concepts explained by previous chapters were re-introduced and re-explained many times throughout the book. Chapters don't build up too much on each other (they do but very little). i suppose it comes with the "cut and paste" nature of the book.My second beef with this book is that it mentions many terms that depend on technological trends of the past and present without any attempt at explaining them. This is not endemic in the whole book however, there are chapters where such things are explained and put in context but it is still frustrating. I'm left with having to search the net to find out WTH is the author talking about. So much for the "complete" part of the title. That goes for my crituque, the book however does contain a lot of useful info. I don't think you'll be able to "network to the moon" like one reviewer said but you'll be able set up a home network more confidently. And maybe, just maybe, a small commercial network for your business. Nothing fancy though just a basic network. At the very least, if you're the boss, you'll be better able to understand WTH your network guy is talking about (not completely but better). Also, many things in the book are based on technological trends so i wouldn't depend on this one book for understanding the fundamental networking and be done with it. you'll still need to keep yourself updated. though i think that'll be a lot less painful than reading this book.

Too light,

This review is from: Networking Complete (Paperback)
This book tells the reader little more than he/she would learn by typing "<command> -?" at the shell prompt. The binder says, "1000 pages for $19.99." That should tell you what you're getting. I should have bought an old textbook or something. That would be much more fulfilling. |
