There is now a second edition...,
By A Customer
This review is from: Networking Essentials Exam Guide: Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (Productivity Point Internation) (Hardcover)
FYI, Dan York wrote a second edition of this book that was published in Nov 1999. He apparently updated the text based on feedback from readers and to correct some errors in this first edition. The new book is softcover and the ISBN is 0789722658.

This book + Transcender exams = Passing score,
By A Customer
This review is from: Networking Essentials Exam Guide: Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (Productivity Point Internation) (Hardcover)
I just returned from taking the Networking Essentials exam and passed with a 699. I read the book, took the tests on the CD that came with it and for my "final" I took all four Transceder tests. There were very few quetsions in the Transcender tests or on Microsoft's exam that were not covered in the book but could have been tested on. Check braindump sites to get a better handle on what the test is like. Don't waste your time with anything else 4 1/2 stars. Buy it!

Written so everybody can understand it,

I highly recommend this title, as it explains networking with examples that everybody can understand (even without previous knowledge of the topic). The only reason that I will not give it 5 stars is that I encountered questions at the certification that was not covered by the book. But it still gave me an excellent knowledge of networking, and I passed the certification with a comfortable margin, so it is absolutely worth the money.

A good background; not enough for todays exam,

This review is from: Networking Essentials Exam Guide: Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (Productivity Point Internation) (Hardcover)
I picked this book as my main study guide for this module of my MCSE. It was a good guide to the study areas, but with the Computer Adaptive Testing now employed in the MCPs(see Microsoft site) you need a sharper knowledge and practical skills. On its own, this book would not have got me through the exam; you definately need a more technical supplement to pass. I used the New Riders book, and a MS Press Exam test questions guide, and passed with 70% or so.. Good luck!

Great content...practice questions are simplistic,
By A Customer
This review is from: Networking Essentials Exam Guide: Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (Productivity Point Internation) (Hardcover)
I felt the content of this book was very good. I'm quite new to networking, so I studied this book and others for a couple of months. To my surprise, the Networking Essentials test is now adaptive. Passing on my test was 552...I scored 756. I credit the information in this book for that score, but I relied on several other books for practice questions. The practice questions in the book seemed really easy and I was suspicious that maybe the actual exam questions were harder. I was definitely right about that. So I can highly recommend this book's content, but don't rely on the practice questions to make you feel you're ready for the real exam.

Simply the Best Networking Essentials Book,
By boo1@home.com (Oklahoma City, Oklahoma) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Networking Essentials Exam Guide: Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (Productivity Point Internation) (Hardcover)
I read this book, the one from Sybex, and the one from Microsoft Press before taking the test. I must say this is simply the best book that covers Networking Essentials. The amount of material covered isn't necessarily more in this book, it's the way that he explains it. There are superb examples and real life scenarios. There are minor errors, but there's a webpage up that has all the corrections. I took the test this week and was ecstatic to score perfect with 1000/1000. Much thanks to this book.

I little expensive, BUT cheaper than taking the test twice,
This review is from: Networking Essentials Exam Guide: Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (Productivity Point Internation) (Hardcover)
When I first went looking for an exam prep book, I spent almost 2 hours looking through all the different one. I had finially narrowed it down to this one or the Sybex one. I was hesitant with this book because of the price. However, it just looked so much better than the others. After reading it and doing the test question, I felt very confident when I went in to take my exam(first exam ever). I scored 823(792 was passing). My only complaint was that with the questions, they are divided into 3 sections: General Assessment, Chapter Exams, and a mastery assessment. There were a lot of repeats between the different sections, in fact the answers were in the same order, which became difficult to not memorize the question instead of actually thinking of the correct answer. My suggestion in that between this book and the other free exam questions that can be downloaded from Microsoft, you should have no problem. As a side note, there were many questions in the book about ARCNet and Wireless networking(especially frequencies), I had no questions on my exam about those topics. And I did have a lot of troublshooting questions. Just a little FYI.

I've been increasingly impressed with this whole line of books, and this Networking Essentials offering is no different. All books in this series that I've read so far are laid out superbly - making reading the book strait through easy. Chapter ending tests confirm your understanding of each chapter, and then two more lengthy tests (98 and 134 questions) test your overall ability to pass the Networking Essentials exam

An excellent resource for learning about networks,
By A Customer
This review is from: Networking Essentials Exam Guide: Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (Productivity Point Internation) (Hardcover)
This book is the only resource that I used in preparing for the Network Essentials 70-58 exam, and I passed the exam. Dan York does an excellent job of taking technical material and describing it in a very easy to read, down to earth format. The book is well organized and well written, and it not only prepares you for the test but also helps you to learn the technologies involved with computer networks.

I just got back from taking the Network Essentials test. Passed with flying colors on the first try due to this book along with the Exam Cram books. Took the Adaptive test had 25 questions in 25 minutes. Read both books cover to cover and took lot's of practice tests from the CD's and various websites. Highly recommended!!
