I've worked at various high-tech Internet companies like: Nortel Networks, Intel, Cisco Systems, and Inktomi. I am also an instructor and this book is one of the suggested readings for my class "Introduction to the Internet & Data Networking."

The authors' style of Question & Answer development is very helpful for both learning and teaching of entry level and intermediate level users in the networking arenas. The background information on the development of the Internet and many various internetworking technologies are explained in great detail in this book.

If you enjoy talking about the Internet and internetworking, I believe this book is great one to have in your collection.

This book is a must both for the novice as well as for the seasoned technician. While the new-comer with little subject- knowledge will find even difficult themes well explained, Networking Explained is a very good resource for the professional. It brings technical matters to the point. The question / answer-mode used in the book is an interesting approach to transfer rather difficult knowledge. A must for persons dealing with networks, and certainly worth its money.

I have numerous netowrking books and Networking Explained is probably the easist to understand. The detail and information contained in the book is very good. The Q&A format is very different and effective. This format makes even a novice understand the information being provided.

Overall this is one book that any network user/administrator or law enforcement personnel should have.(Thanks Bill!)

This is a well written book that covers from the most basic to most complex network issues. Whether you want to know how cable modems work, or what the exact pinouts for EIA-232 DB-9 or DB-25 connections are, it is in there.

I also appreciate the humor (for example, Q: If you were to use on word to describe the physical later what would it be? A: Wire. Or if you are from the state of Texas (U.S.A.), it's called "wharr.") and many drawings the book has.

Networking Explained has much appeal to a sales person as it does the network admin.

Very good book for beginners and professionals with spotty formal training for the following reasons:

-it uses a special Q&A format, where questions are asked and then answered from the simplest to the complex all in sequential, relational order. The author explains many tough concepts using analogies, whereas most books tend to be lists of facts. This makes it especially friendly to non-experts, or jr. administrators. No unexplained acronyms here.

-one of the authors has 25 years of networking experience and it shows in his statements, since he shares angles and opinions one would truly value from someone with his experience. To me this makes it especially worthy buying. There are way too many guides compiled by certification mill graduates.

- there is a enough detail to make this an excellent supplement to, say, those studying for Network+ certification who actually want to learn something rather than just test. They cover the important subjects like TCP-IP and the OSI model with at more than enough detail.

Negative points:

- expensive and does not contain any supplemntal CD-ROM

- I wish the obviously very experienced authors would have added about 100 more pages of in-depth material. I would buy "Advanced Networking Explained" if it ever comes out.

A pivotal book in technical information about networking, this book is a true tour de force for those interested in understanding all those mysteries of networks. It covers practically all aspects of networking and excels in filling in the gaps of knowledge that all technical and non-technical personnel have in trying to come to grips with this difficult subject. It is written in a truly unique Q&A style and manages to convey the most technical of information in a style that is easy to read for anyone who wishes to truly learn networks and for those who need to understand networking at a deeper level than they do.

I have been a big fan of Dr. Gallo's math books and Dr. Hancock's networking and security books for a long time. I am very pleased they got together and produced such a tremendous technical resource.

While other reviewers have lauded this book and it's question and answer format, I found it difficult to read, and understand. The question and answer format may work for some, but it is not for everyone. There were many sub-questions in the explanations that were not followed up on. As a novice to networking, I found a presupposition of knowledge of networking on the authors part. For an intermediate level user, who wants to know the nitty gritty of networking, it is great. For the novice... I am still looking.

In fact, this book is really very useful for network beginners and will be a good guide for still networkers.Everyone has many questions on network protocols,layers, transmission medias, devices,etc.And takes too long time to get an answer for these questions.In this book you can find your probably questions first, and then answers come.The book has been designed like an inter-active course, even the teachers (autors) give coffee breaks.Every networker must has this great book in their technical library.Also one, who is preparing to get any network certificate program, should read this book at first.As brief, the book is such a handbook for network beginner.
