Editorial Reviews

From the Back Cover

The most complete networking lab reference-anywhere!
Certification for technical professionals, especially in Microsoft and Cisco technologies, has become a mandatory qualification in the company-hiring practice. However, there is a growing concern that newly certified employees are merely "book smart" and lack the hands-on practice that will enable them to actually install and troubleshoot network components. Author John Chirillo is a longtime holder of, and trainer for, all the certifications covered in this book, and he provides you with all the processes, explanations, and exercises that are needed for every network, large or small.
This complete laboratory practice manual is a must-have for every IT department, and includes:
* Hands-on lab work not published anywhere else
* Interactive "real-time" virtual simulations for configuring Microsoft Windows NT Server/Workstation, Microsoft Windows 2000 Server, and Cisco Access Routers
* Lab exercises for Web masters, MCPs, MCSEs, CCDAs, CCDPs, CCNAs, and CCNPs
* Coverage of Windows NT Server Suites, networking essentials, internetworking with TCP/IP, and actual troubleshooting and implementation
The CD-ROM contains all the lab exercises in the book.

1.0 out of 5 stars Decent Book - Poor Simulation Software, March 21, 2003
By
B. Toothman (Louisiana, United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Networking Lab Practice Kit (Paperback)
The book is OK - concise, with good illustrations. It's a detailed study guide rather than the simple lab manual I expected. The complete book is recorded on the CD and set up for web-style browsing. You can search for specific text or click on technical terms to get on-line definitions. Practice tests are also included.

The "interactive real-time virtual simulations" are the disappointing feature. They work like this:

You are presented with a picture of a server desktop and a message at the bottom of the screen tells you where to click. Following the instructions, first you click on the Start Button. Then you click on Programs. Then you click on Administrative Tools. Then you click on a certain utility. Then you click on a menu. Then you click on a tab. Then you click on a button. Congratulations! You are done.

What what happens if you open the wrong utility? You can't. Click in the wrong place? You can't. Want to repeat the exercise without being told where to click? You can't.

These are not exercises that let you apply concepts or learn real-world skills. I realize that any simulation program has limits, but the software in this kit is not something thrown in for free. It is billed as an integral part of the kit. In the introduction the author states, "Your learning experience will be as if you were sitting in front of a server, or directly connected to the console of a Cisco router." Actually, nothing could be farther from the truth.

5.0 out of 5 stars Passed the CCNA first time around using this book!, February 13, 2003
This review is from: Networking Lab Practice Kit (Paperback)
I had no idea this book even existed for the CCNA certification. Networking Lab Practice Kit covered all the objectives with v-labs on the CD. I passed the test first time around with only 5 days studying the Cisco section of this book. Now I can go and study for the MCP with the MS sections. Highly recommended!
