This introductory text is based on a successful, four-skills approach to German that stresses communicative competence, cultural awareness, and mastery of language structures.

Each lesson includes: Dialoge, which introduces new grammar and vocabulary in context; two Worschatz sections, (1) contains words and phrases from Dialoge and other related items for use in exercises, and (2) contains vocabulary needed to understand Lesestück (reading); and Variationen, activities that encourage students to use material from the Dialoge to express their own thoughts, ideas, and experiences.

About the Author

David Dollenmayer is Associate Professor of German at the Worcester Polytechnic Institute (Worcester, MA). He received his BA and Ph.D. from Princeton and was a Fullbright fellow at the University of Munich. He has written on the 20th century writers Alfred Doblin, Joseph Roth, Christa Wolf, and Ingeborg Bachmann, and he is the author ofThe Berlin Novels of Alfred Doblin, 1998.

Tom Hansen is Professor of German at Wellesley College. He received his BA from Tufts University, studied at the University of Tubingen, and received his Ph.D. from Harvard University. This past December saw the publication of his translation of The Trumpet of Reform: German Literature in Nineteenth Century New England (Columbia, South Carolina, Camden House, 1998). The work, by Prof. Sigrid Bauschinger of UMASS Amherst, traces the influence of German writers, particularly Goethe, upon the Concord Circle of intellectuals around Ralph Waldo Emerson. The chapters cover Emerson, Margaret Fuller, Thoreau, Bronson Alcott, Louisa May Alcott. Prof. Hansen has also embarked upon a new project that grows out of his earlier work on German exile literature: the life and work of the artist and book designer, George Salter (1897-1967). Salter's beautiful and innovative book covers, which influenced the aesthetics of the book trade in Berlin of the Weimar Republic and later in post-war New York, are the subject of a monograph he is currently researching.
