This one for 2012 is the latest in my large collection of the Vienna Philharmonic performances of the New Year's concert starting with Von Karajan in 1987.

The DTS HD master audio provides clarity and an excellent sound stage.

In a program that emphasizes polkas over waltzes, the Wiener Philharmoniker (Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra) gives yet another riveting, quite inspired, New Year's Concert performance featuring the superb musicianship of orchestra concertmaster Rainer Honeck and conductor Mariss Jansons, who returns for his second New Year's Concert program, the latest in a fruitful twenty year-old partnership (The video features the excellent dancers of the Vienna City Ballet and eloquent commentary from actress Julie Andrews, once again hosting this concert, which is co-produced by ORF and PBS television station WNET. Among the musicians is the orchestra's first American member, trombonist Jeremy Wilson, whose first - and only - orchestral audition was with the Vienna State Opera Orchestra - from whom the members of the Wiener Philharmoniker are elected to - in 2007, becoming a member of the Wiener Philharmoniker in 2011.). Featured are polkas and quadrilles composed by Johann Strauss, Sr., Eduard Strauss ("Carmen Quadrille"), Joseph Strauss and Johann Strauss, including the likes of "Tritsch-Trasch" and "Thunder and Lightning" polkas. One of the musical highlights includes Jansons conducting and playing simultaneously, a most unique percussion instrument, and the Vienna Boys Choir accompanying the Wiener Philharmoniker, in "Fireproof Polka" (Joseph Strauss). Others included the New Year's Concert debut performances of Hans Christian Lumbye's "Copenhagen Railway Steam Gallop "(a Danish admirer of Johann Strauss, who was Tivoli Gardens' musical director) and Peter I. Tchaikovsky's "Panorama" and "Waltz" from the ballet "Sleeping Beauty".Read more ›

You might think you are getting a sneak preview at the start of this concert. Surely the orchestra is drunk and is having fun with the march and the waltz that traditionally conclude this annual event! Not so! The opening item is in fact jointly composed by Johann and Josef Strauss in which they recall their father's "Radetzky March", and in the second item Johann Strauss weaves many threads taken from "An der schonen blauen Donnau". And so the fun continues. The Vienna Boys' Choir provides some gratuitous vocal colour, the conductor demonstrates how to play a couple of anvils, many rarely used percussion instruments are deployed, non-Viennese composers Tchaikovsky and Lumbye get into the act, and there are the expected ballet sequences and views of the audience, the floral decorations and the glorious interior of the Musikverein, Vienna.

A proportion of the program comprises premier inclusions at this annual event - six numbers here, I believe. Optional repeats in the waltzes are usually omitted, allowing for as many as 23 items to comprise the program. Whereas earlier CDs and DVDs provide only 80 or 90 minutes, the duration here is 145 minutes.

Jansons coaxes luscious sounds from the orchestra, setting slower tempi than usual except in the "Carmen Quadrille". Amongst the orchestra personnel you won't see many familiar faces this time. In the audience you'll easily recognise Julie Andrews.

What will bring a smile to your lips or a tear to your eye may vary from person to person. For me it's been two items by Josef Strauss: "Delirien" and "Brennende Liebe".

This is a glorious concert and beautiful presentation. Other reviews have elaborated on what makes this such an enjoyable disc to possess. I would only add a couple of disclaimers:

Sony has not provided a subwoofer channel for either the stereo or surround tracks. While it is normal not to provide a subwoofer channel for PCM stereo, it is unusual not to provide it for surround. (The surround track on this disc is 5.0, not 5.1.) This means that in surround mode the typical home-theater setup will lack all bass below a certain frequency. Depending on your A/V receiver, you may or may not be able to select a setting that will extract the bass from the other 2 or 5 channels and re-direct to your sub. I have a workaround whereby I can hear the bass, along with synthesized, rather than the original, surround sound; thus, unlike one of the reviewers, I find the sound perfectly fine. The negative review is ostensibly from the CD, which could have sound problems not shared with the Blu-ray; however, I also note that some of these reviews mis-attribute their source. One reviewer clearly refers to the quality of the video in spite of having entered his review under the CD category; so one can't really be sure of exactly what is being reviewed here. Could it be that the reviewer who didn't like the sound was actually reviewing the Blu-ray or DVD and got caught in the subwoofer trap? Sony should be ashamed of not releasing this in 5.1.

Also, some have noted the lack of Julie Andrews' introductions on this disc, while at least one other review said they were present. My copy does not have her introductions; the only sign of her is a brief glimpse of her in the audience. I am not aware of multiple versions of this disc, so be aware that you probably won't get Julie.
