Comprehensive, in-depth but not practitioner-friendly,

I bought this book at a local university book store in 1997, thinking that it would be useful someday, because the neural network course I attended was rather rudimentary. Years later, it turns out the book is indeed useful. Some of the things I did not understand, I can understand now. Its biggest strength is its comprehensiveness and effective pedagogical approach. Its biggest downside however is that it does not tell you which is more for passing academic curiosity, and which is essential to know.
