5.0 out of 5 stars AWESOME! A must-have for surviving Neuro!
If you're a medical student taking Neuro, get this book ASAP! At first, I thought it wouldn't be useful because it is so lengthy (400+ pages) compared to the other books in the series. However, it turned out to be an absolute lifesaver while I was taking the course. The neuroanatomy course at my school was very unorganized and poorly taught and our required textbook was...

3.0 out of 5 stars Good book but not an easy read!
Even though this is a great book, it is not a great book for a beginner. Like most, I became interested in the BRS series after physiology, and I decided to use this book for neuroanatomy. This book is not as easy to read. It is extremely dense reading that is cut and dry. I found myself using the glossary in the back of the book every other sentence to look up terms...

5.0 out of 5 stars AWESOME! A must-have for surviving Neuro!, March 13, 2003

If you're a medical student taking Neuro, get this book ASAP! At first, I thought it wouldn't be useful because it is so lengthy (400+ pages) compared to the other books in the series. However, it turned out to be an absolute lifesaver while I was taking the course. The neuroanatomy course at my school was very unorganized and poorly taught and our required textbook was way too verbose to be helpful. This book is very well organized and very thorough for a review book- you really don't even need a textbook, just a neuroanatomy atlas. Rather than getting bogged down in trivial minutiae, this book presents all the basics you need to know to pass neuro. It also has hundreds of review questions to test your knowledge as you go. I couldn't possibly have organized my study of neuroanatomy without this book- and thanks to Dr. Fix, I actually managed an A in Neuro!
The only disadvantage is that, due to its length, it's probably overkill for board review. I'd suggest purchasing High Yield Neuroanatomy by the same author for a quick-and-dirty review before the boards, then testing yourself via the questions in this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Taking the USMLE? GET IT!, September 29, 1997
By A Customer
This review is from: Neuroanatomy (Board Review) (Paperback)
Better than his lectures, you get the answers to many of the boards neuro questions. A quick, yet jam-packed review. Pay attention to the diagrams...they pay off in points on the USMLE.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good book but not an easy read!, April 28, 2008
Even though this is a great book, it is not a great book for a beginner. Like most, I became interested in the BRS series after physiology, and I decided to use this book for neuroanatomy. This book is not as easy to read. It is extremely dense reading that is cut and dry. I found myself using the glossary in the back of the book every other sentence to look up terms used all through the book (ex: dysdiadochokinesia , ataxia, dystonia, etc). It makes reading each chapter very time consuming for a beginner. However, this book does have a good side. Using lecture materials along with this book gave me just enough information to understand it. Additionally, this book is very concise. It will cover just about everything well. I also used it extensively as a reference. In the end, I had a decent experience with this book, but I think that I would have been happier with another source that presented material in a format easier to read. So, the moral of the story is: If you are acquainted with the subject, this is a great book. Otherwise, look for an easier source to learn the material first. Just as a side note, the BRS and high yield neuroanatomy books are written by the same author, and a couple of my friends seemed happier with the high yield book.

3.0 out of 5 stars Too much detail, June 8, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Others have really nailed their reviews. If I was a neuro professor, this might be a great book for me. But there's simply too much detail for the typical med student to bother caring about - especially with a course such as neuro, for which a thorough conceptual understanding of the subject is way more important than knowing every little detail.

I switched to other materials toward the end of the course, and that's what I'll be using for the board. If you're really into (read: obsessed with) neuro, this might be the book for you.

3.0 out of 5 stars Just OK, June 8, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
BRS is usually the go-to review book among those in my class, so I naturally purchased this book to prep for the neuro NBME. When I received it, I was surprised that it was heavier than other BRS books I had. It does hit the high points, but it kind of drones with A LOT of details that could have been left out of the final book. It does do its job but could definitely be shorter.

4.0 out of 5 stars Neuro that makes sense, May 4, 2008
Excellent review as well as primary learning text. Very detailed but better than reading some textbook. Requires time though. I also have the high yield by Dr. Fix but I like this book more.

3.0 out of 5 stars Many mistakes, May 20, 2008
I only had time to use this review book the weekend before the board, so I did all of the questions and then read what I needed to brush up on. There were a LOT of miskeyed answers, and then some answers were just flat out wrong. Not a bad book, prepared me fairly well, but the process was frustrating because of all the mistakes.

4.0 out of 5 stars A LOT of info to go through, February 11, 2007
If you enjoy details and endless amounts of info, then this book is for you. It is also a good reference during neuro courses.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for Neuro Teachers, July 29, 2008
The good thing about this book is that it helps u prepare a class in no time. I recommend the part of cranial nerves to the students since its easier to study than most books.

2.0 out of 5 stars Info is helpful; Questions trivial with mistakes, September 25, 2011
I bought the book mainly for the review questions. As I have been flipping through, I have found many of the review questions to be very trivial. Many of them also have mistakes. I have many other BRS books and the questions in this one aren't anywhere near the quality of the others. The information in the book is good. I would just recommend looking at a copy of the book (if you can) before you purchase it.
