Book Description

March 21, 1991 0195054318 978-0195054316 First Edition
This book provides a comprehensive discussion of neurobehavioral issues in stroke. In addition to presenting neurological and neuropsychological studies of cerebrovascular disease, it offers tutorials on the methods of imaging brain structure and measuring metabolism and blood flow. After reviewing the basic biochemical and pathophysiologic aspects of stroke, the authors discuss positron emission tomography, xenon cerebral blood flow, computed tomography of the head, and magnetic resonance imagery. The largest section of the book deals with the clinical and research issues facing professionals concerned with stroke. In particular, localization of function after stroke-induced deficits, stroke-related depression, cerebrovascular dementia, stroke risk factors, and disorders of cerebral vessels are considered. The book ends with discussions of recovery from stroke and of the management of neurobehavioral symptoms.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"This book provides a unique synthesis of data that not only expands the definition of stroke but provides fascinating glimpses into how the brain "behaves" (and thereby how we ourselves behave). I strongly recommend it to neurologists, psychiatrists, psychologists, and anyone else interested in the physiologic basis of higher cortical function." --The New England Journal of Medicine

"Even one who has devoted himself to the field of cerebral circulation and its diseases will find much of interest and of use. . . .Authoritative chapters have been sequenced logically in order to cover the range of clinical effects of stroke on the human being. The chapters on clinical neuropsychology, recovery and treatment are particularly well done. . . .The list of authors is outstanding. . . .This book is recommended both for those already in the field, as well as for those learning it the first time." --Journal of the Neurological Sciences

"The strengths of this book lie on the careful selection of chapter authors, who are leaders in this field, write clearly, and express valuable opinions. Each chapter provides a useful review of its topic." --The Journal of Nervous and Mental Disease
