About the Author


Raja Parasuraman is Professor of Psychology at George Mason University. He has longstanding research programs in human factors and cognitive neuroscience. His previous books include Varieties of Attention (1984), Automation and Human Performance (1996), and The Attentive Brain (1998). In 2004 he received the Franklin V. Taylor Award for Lifetime Achievement in Applied Experimental and Engineering Psychology from the American Psychological Association. From 2001 to 2005, he served as Chair of the National Research Council's Committee on Human Factors in the National Academy of Sciences.

Matt Rizzo is Professor of Neurology, Engineering, and Public Policy at the University of Iowa, where he directs the Division of Neuroergonomics and is a senior member of the Division of Behavioral Neurology and Cognitive Neuroscience. He is also a Development Executive and Science Advisor at a New York-based media company producing documentaries for major television venues. Dr. Rizzo has longstanding research support through the National Institutes of Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. He has contributed to many scholarly papers and books, served on numerous professional committees, and is a member of several professional organizations.

Format: Paperback
The main purpose of this review is to give a synopsis of the book, as well as provide my opinion on the presented neuroergonomic topics and my impression of the book as a whole.

Overall Opinion:
"Neuroergonomics: The Brain at Work" is an intelligently assembled look into the emerging field of neuroergonomics. Put together by one of the leading researchers in the area in Dr. Raja Parasuraman, the book explains complex testing methods with great clarity while still maintaining the imagination to inquire the potential impact of various research projects. While the topic of assessing neural activity and stress during a workplace task may come off as uninteresting, the future of neuroergonomics in adaptive automation and virtual reality certainly captured my interest.

Synopsis:
Neuroergonomics a relatively young field that is focused on using science to improve performance in the workplace. Neuroergonomic research works to use neuroscience methods, for example neural imaging, to assess stress during a task and then figure out how to reduce this stress and increase productivity. The core philosophy behind the field is that the key to understanding how well someone works, is to analyze the very thing that allows them to solve problems in the first place, their brain. The various methods for evaluating the brain during a task include electroencephalography, event-related potentials, functional magnetic resonance imaging, and even transcranial doppler sonography. These methods strive to figure out location and timing of the associated neural activity. While most research is involved in identifying inhibitors of productivity, other research is geared towards connecting the brain and the outer environment with real-time evaluation and response technology.
