Book Description

April 13, 2006 0195300904 978-0195300901 4
This new edition of Neurology of Eye Movements is a major revision providing clinicians with a synthesis of current and new scientific information that can be applied to the diagnosis and treatment of disorders of ocular motility. Basic scientists will also benefit from descriptions of how data from anatomic, electrophysiologic, pharmacologic, and imaging studies can be directly applied to the study of disease. By critically reviewing such basic studies, Drs. Leigh and Zee build a conceptual framework that can be applied to the interpretation of abnormal ocular motor behavior at the bedside. These syntheses are summarized in boxes, figures, schematics, and tables. Insights and techniques from current research, case examples, bedside and laboratory studies, and thousands of references are all available here from two leading clinician-scientists who have been studying eye movements for over a quarter century. The previous edition of Neurology of Eye Movements, Third Volume, established as acknowledged as a classic in the field, is now enhanced in this new edition by an accompanying DVD featuring the full text with links to 20 Video Displays that provide teaching slides ready for classroom presentation. Also on the DVD are 200 video clips, images, and the lectures notes Control Systems Applied to the Oculomotor System by David A. Robinson. For detailed information on using the DVD, visit http://www.us.oup.com/us/pdf/0195300904DVD.pdf.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"This volume with its DVD is very exciting, exhilarating indeed...it has references both numbered and in alphabetical order, up to 1000+ per chapter, it has a DVD with both the whole text of the book and numerous video clips that are not copy protected- and so may be used in lectures- and it tells us about omnipause neurons...Every pediatric neurology library must of course acquire a copy."--European Journal of Pediatric Neurology

"The new edition, written by R. John Leigh...and David S. Zee...two highly renowned experts in eye movement disorders, is a major revision providing neurobiologists and clinicians with a synthesis of current and new scientific information that can be applied to the diagnosis and treatment of disorders of eye motility. Basic scientists will also benefit....All chapters are well written, with initial list of contents, instructive subheadings, many tables and figures, extensive and most instructive summaries, and thousands of references....This seminal book, based on personal studies of two leading experts in eye movements over more than a quarter century, established as a classic in the field, is enhanced in this new edition by an accompanying DVD featuring the full text with links to 20 video displays that provide teaching slides ready for presentation.... [an] outstanding and masterfully written reference book..."--European Journal of Neurology

5.0 out of 5 stars Neurology of Eye Movements, January 5, 2001
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Many medical textbooks merely describe the clinical features of eye movement disorders. What I enjoyed about this book was that the authors provide excellent descriptions and explanations of eye movement disorders. The explanations of why these disorders occur provided me with a depth of understanding that I did not have prior to reading this book. The chapters on eye movement physiology, anatomy and clinical disorders are very comprehensive, well written, up to date and well referenced. The book is also offered on a CD-ROM with videos of eye movement disorders. I strongly recommend this book. As a neurologist, this book will be very useful for my clinical practice.

4.0 out of 5 stars Worthwhile update and great CD, May 5, 2000
By A Customer
This new edition of The Neurology of Eye Movements is well worth the wait. The addition of the CD is significant and the videos on it are well-done and clearly visible. You can read all you want about oscillopsias (or other clinical disorders), but until you see one with the text nearby, it's just not clear. Well done.

4.0 out of 5 stars This reference is lucid, concise, and easy to use., October 29, 1999

This reference is lucid, concise, and easy to use. It takes the point of view of the neurologist which is a higher plane than that of clinical eye care, but it reads like a novel. The first half explains the structures and their functions (theory), and the last half explains the differential diagnosis and therapies. Each chapter ends with the most extensive and up to date bibliography I have ever seen. Explanations such as how to distinguish the retic muscle are in plain language, clearer than most, and there is no redundancy in text or illustrations. The Leigh-Zee eye book is definitely a keeper for clinical reference.
